Hot scoring headlines MJT USPA Series’ 90-strong field at Golden Eagle

 
Over 90 junior golfers from across British Columbia and as far as New Taipei, Taiwan, descended on Golden Eagle Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, BC, June 14–15, for the second and final stop in the MJT US Performance Academy Series, a waitlisted event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s number one-played and most competitive junior circuit.
 
With six MJT US Performance Academy division titles and coveted qualifying spots in both the East Coast Junior Championship and MJT National Tour Challenge on the line, the competition was intense. Several players lit up the leaderboard with red-hot rounds and standout under-par performances, showcasing the depth of talent across the field. Round one even brought an unexpected pause in play when a bear made a surprise appearance on the fairway, adding a truly wild twist to an already electric weekend.

Outstanding rounds of 66-69 (135) were fired by Jackson Wang, from Langley, BC, winner of the MJT Bantam Boys division with a fantastic 9-under-par total score for a 13-year-old.  Two phenomenal rounds of 69 and 67 (136) were shot by Lilian Zhao of Port Moody, BC, winner of MJT Girls 15–19, a brilliant 8-under-par total score by a 14-year-old. Other exceptional performances leading to division wins were recorded by Tiger Xie, 14, of Surrey, BC, in the MJT Juvenile Boys division (73-71=144), Henry Tran, 17, from Vancouver, BC, in MJT Junior Boys (75-71=146), Hsi Huai Lin, 13, of New Taipei, Taiwan, in MJT Girls U15 (75-71=146), and James C.R. Qiu, 12, from Surrey, BC, in MJT Peewee Boys (73-67=140).

Vancouver’s Henry Tran, 17, fired rounds of 75 and 71 (146) to claim the MJT US Performance Academy Junior Boys title at Golden Eagle, showcasing a powerful performance that included four birdies and two eagles. “It feels great! Great feeling!” said Tran, who credited the ‘fun vibe, great prizes, and amazing tee gift’” as his favourite parts of competing on the MJT.

Lilian Zhao of Port Moody, BC, delivered red-hot rounds of 69 and 67 (136) to dominate the MJT Girls 15–19 division. The 15-year-old racked up 12 birdies en route to her lowest-ever tournament score. “It feels great! I shot my personal best on the second round after shooting -3 before,” she shared. “The weather was also really nice and the course was in great shape.” Zhao added that ‘the people’ and fun elements like ‘KP and long drive’ make MJT events a highlight.

Fourteen-year-old Tiger Xie of Surrey, BC, kept it steady and sharp to secure the MJT Juvenile Boys title with rock-solid rounds of 73 and 71 (144), finishing two strokes ahead of the field with an even-par total. His tournament featured nine birdies and an eagle, rounding out a well-earned win in a competitive division.

Hailing all the way from New Taipei, Taiwan, 13-year-old Hsi Huai Lin impressed in the MJT Girls U15 division, firing rounds of 75 and 71 (146) with a total of nine birdies. “I had a lot of pressure coming down the stretch,” she stated. “But I’m very proud that I pulled through.” The young international talent calmly delivered under pressure to secure the win.

In the MJT Bantam Boys division, 13-year-old Jackson Wang of Langley, BC, was simply unstoppable. He torched the course with back-to-back under-par rounds of 66 and 69 (135), carding a total of 12 birdies over the weekend. His first-round six-under-par set the tone for a commanding performance from start to finish. “It feels great winning this tournament,” Wang declared, “because I took a two-tournament break and I won the first one after the break.” When asked what he enjoys most about the MJT, he added, “The free pizza after and how the tournament is organized.”

James C.R. Qiu of Surrey, BC, delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend in the MJT Peewee Boys division. The 12-year-old backed up an opening-round 73 with a sizzling five-under 67 on day two to finish at 140, highlighted by eight birdies and an eagle. His exceptional second round made him one to watch as the season heats up.
