Maui Jim Series showcases style and substance at MJT’s Hills at Portal stop
Canada’s premier tour since 1999, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), continued its nationwide dominance with another full field in the MJT Maui Jim Series at The Hills at Portal Golf Club in Surrey, BC, from May 31 to June 1. The two-day tournament, one of six in the national MJT Maui Jim Series, saw players competing in six age groups for titles, qualifying spots, and fabulous prizing including Maui Jim sunglasses for every division winner.
Heavy rain, pooling greens, and cold, damp temperatures challenged the young athletes during round one, with a reprieve on day two. With MJT Order of Merit points towards National Championship qualification on the line, as well as exemptions into both the East Coast Junior Championship in New Brunswick and the MJT National Tour Challenge in Ontario, the stakes, and the competition, were high.
Low Overall Honours for boys and girls respectively were claimed by Jonathan Mingze Xia, 15, of Surrey, BC, in MJT Juvenile Boys (75-69=144) and Jenny Guo, 13, of West Vancouver, BC, in MJT Girls 15-19 (75-72=147). Other standout performances led to division wins for Hunter Auramenko, 17, from Campbell River, BC, in MJT Junior Boys (75-72=147), Tiffany Rao, 11, from Vancouver, BC, in MJT Girls U15 (77-83=160) , Kevin Zhang, 14, from Vancouver, BC, in MJT Bantam Boys (70-80=150), and James C.R. Qiu, 12, from Surrey, BC, in MJT Peewee Boys (74-74=148).
