Elite field of 112 showcase MJT talent in Junior Worlds Qualifier at Morgan Creek
Some outstanding scores lit up the leaderboard in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Junior Worlds Qualifier, as 112 highly talented players teed it up on Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey, BC, on April 5–6. The field was treated to mostly sunny skies on day one, followed by a dramatic shift to heavy rain on day two, adding an extra layer of challenge to the final round. With a packed field and high stakes, the weekend featured incredible performances and fierce competition across all six divisions.
Brilliant scoring led to Low Overall titles won by BoSheng (Dylan) Zhang, 14, of Tsawwassen, BC, in MJT Juvenile Boys (138) and Lilian Zhao, 15, of Port Moody, BC, in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division (140).
Other outstanding performances led to division wins for Manny Lalh, 18, of Nanaimo, BC, in MJT Junior Boys (142), Jackson Wang, 13, from Langley, BC, in MJT Bantam Boys (140), Maggie Zhang, 15, of Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls U15 (142), and Ziping Chen, 11, from Surrey, BC, in MJT Peewee Boys (150).
In addition to vying for division titles, players were competing for the chance to qualify for several major events, including the MJT East Coast Junior Championship, Junior America's Cup – Team BC, MJT National Tour Challenge, and the international Uswing Mojing Junior World Golf Championship.

Eighteen-year-old Manny Lalh of Nanaimo, BC, put together a clutch performance by backing up a solid opening-round 73 with a sharp final round of 69 to finish at 142, taking home the MJT Junior Boys title in a fiercely competitive division. Lalh racked up nine birdies over the weekend and credited the event’s quality for helping him elevate his game. “The event was very competitive — the setup, greens, tee boxes, and overall condition were phenomenal,” he said.

With eight birdies and an eagle on the card, Lilian Zhao, 15, of Port Moody, BC, delivered a stellar performance, firing rounds of 71 and 69 to win the MJT Girls 15-19 and Low Overall Girl titles. Zhao’s composed play and strong finish set her apart in a competitive field. When asked who has helped shape her success, Zhao was quick to credit her support team: “My family — my sister played a big role because we would always play together and have friendly competitions. My mom also supports me and makes sure I get good nutrition. And of course, my coaches (golf and fitness).”

A standout performance by BoSheng (Dylan) Zhang, 14, of Tsawwassen, BC, witnessed him firing brilliant rounds of 67 and 71 to win the MJT Juvenile division and Boys Low Overall titles by an impressive margin. Zhang nine birdies and an eagle over two rounds showcased sharp ball-striking and a fearless approach under pressure. His opening-round 67 set the tone for the weekend, and he held steady in round two to secure a dominant win in a deep field. After the victory, Zhang credited the people behind his success, saying he “really wants to say thanks to his father and his mom, and of course his coaches.”

Richmond’s Maggie Zhang, 13, was on fire at Morgan Creek, carding back-to-back rounds of 71 for a two-day total of 142 to win the MJT Girls U15 Division by a commanding five-shot margin. Zhang poured in 11 birdies over the weekend, showing off a hot flatstick — especially impressive given her last-minute equipment change. “I changed my putter just before this tournament, so I did a lot of putting to get used to it,” she said. The victory marks her second MJT title of the 2025 season, as she continues an early-season hot streak.

Jackson Wang, 13, of Langley, BC, added another victory to his resume with hot rounds of 71 and 69 in the MJT Bantam Boys Division at Morgan Creek. Wang came into the event riding a wave of momentum after a second-place finish at the MJT FCG World Golf Championship Qualifier at Northview and a division title at the MJT adidas Golf Series at University Golf Club — and he didn’t let up. With 10 birdies over the weekend and two sub-par rounds, Wang secured a two-stroke victory in style.

Surrey’s Ziping Chen, 11, kept his cool over two rounds, carding 74 and 76 to take the top spot in the MJT Peewee Boys Division. With four birdies on the weekend and a composed, consistent game, Chen edged the competition by a single stroke to secure a well-earned victory.
