Sunny skies and high stakes showcase Canada’s rising talent at MJT Mini Tour in Cambridge

 
Under a beautiful summer sky, Canada’s number one junior tour brought nearly 30 young golfers aged 12 and under together for the MJT Mini Tour at Beaverdale Golf Club in Cambridge, ON, on August 12. These talented young athletes on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour showcased their skills across five divisions in an exhilarating competition. With titles and qualification spots for the coveted MJT Mini Tour National Championship in Tsawwassen, BC, up for grabs, the spotlight was on these future stars of Canadian golf.

Notable performances resulted in division wins for Niklas Zierik, 11, from Collingwood, ON, in MJT Boys 11-12 (75), Kai Clubine, 9, from Fort Smith, NT, in MJT Boys 9-10 (80), Alicia Chen, 9, of North York, ON, in MJT Girls 9-10 (87), Logan Metzen, 7, of Etobicoke, ON, in MJT Boys 8U (91), and Lanai Park, 8, from Oakville, ON, in MJT Girls 8U (77). 
 
Top scorers who were not already exempt qualified for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship and are listed below along with highlights from each division and quotes from the division winners. Scores, as well as results from the Closest-to-the-Pin competition, are posted on the MJT website here.

Lanai Park, an 8-year-old from Oakville, ON, left her competitors in the dust as she ran away with the win in MJT Girls 8U. Demonstrating poise, Park shared her simple yet effective strategy: "I take deep breaths." Her outstanding performance was matched by her enthusiasm for the event, giving it a perfect "10/10" and cheering on the organizers with, "keep up the good work!"

Nine-year-old Alicia Chen from North York, ON, dominated the course in a division all her own. Despite being the sole competitor in her MJT Girls 9-10 age group, Chen’s dedication and drive were unwavering. "I practiced every single day," she shared, and is already looking ahead, saying, "I feel good, but I think I can do better next time."

At just seven years old, Logan Metzen from Etobicoke, ON, is already making waves in the junior golf world with a standout victory in MJT Boys 8U that has him dreaming big. Brimming with confidence, Metzen declared, "I feel like I can win a lot more tournaments," signaling that this is just the beginning of his journey. His enthusiasm for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour was equally high, rating it a perfect "10/10" and exclaiming, "I love it!"

Nine-year-old Kai Clubine from Fort Smith, NT, won the MJT Boys 9-10 title fueled by his relentless dedication and positive attitude. "Practice – we have been working on my putting and going to the course every day," Clubine shared, revealing the hard work behind his success. After his win, he modestly said, "I always like to do my best, and when I win, it's a bonus."

Niklas Zierik, 11, from Collingwood, ON, has secured his much-desired second win of the season, showing remarkable composure and mental strength on the course. "During my round, I would always try to make sure to not get mad and always think positive," Zierik stated, highlighting the mindset that led to his victory. Reflecting on his achievement, he said, "I feel very happy and proud of myself and give credit to my family and friends. I really wanted a second win before the end of the season."

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s #1 Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
