Global talent and three-time champs reign at MJT Mini Tour’s Sawmill stop

Sawmill Golf Course in Fenwick, ON, set amidst deciduous forests and meandering creeks, buzzed with excitement this past Sunday as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, Canada’s number one Junior Tour, held a one-day MJT Mini Tour stop for 12U players.  A keen field came out to compete, vying for titles in six divisions and the chance to qualify for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in British Columbia this August. 

Making her MJT debut all the way from Kamiina, Japan, was nine-year-old Sana Kojima, adding an international flair to the event as she won the MJT Girls 9-10 title by three strokes. Another highlight was an exceptional round of 67 from the Girls 8U adjusted tees by division winner, Lanai Park, 8, of Oakville, ON. Other notable performances resulted in division wins by Cocomi Wang, 11, of Toronto, ON, in MJT Girls 11-12 (78), Logan Metzen, 7, of Etobicoke, ON, in MJT Boys 8U (90), Derek Zhao, 10, of Maple, ON, in MJT Boys 9-10 (77), and Bentley McNamara, 12, of Woodstock, ON, in MJT Boys 11-12 (77).
Top scorers who were not already exempt qualified for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship and are listed below along with their scores and quotes from division winners. Full results, as well as results from the Closest-to-the-Pin competition, are posted on the MJT website.

Eight-year-old Lanai Park from Oakville, ON, proved she's no stranger to the podium with another impressive performance on the MJT. When asked about her secret to success, Park casually revealed, "I just take a deep breath." She added, "It means a lot." Park's cool demeanor and sharp skills on the course are as refreshing as her winning score!

Sana Kojima, a nine-year-old golfer hailing all the way from Kamiina, Japan, brought her A-game to the tournament. When asked about her secret to success, Kojima simply stated, "I just enjoy golf." She added, "I practiced hard; I've been here for one week from Japan." Radiating confidence, she added, "I am very proud." Kojima's dedication knows no bounds—literally!

Cocomi Wang, an 11-year-old from Toronto, ON, claimed her first MJT title with poise and determination. Cocomi shared, "I had a mind setting goal and I did workout and practice every day." When asked about her strategy, she revealed, "I had to keep calm and not have any greedy thoughts like 'I want to get a birdie.'"

Logan Metzen, 7, from Etobicoke, ON, stated he kicked off his day with some serious simulator practice before hitting the greens. When asked about his outlook for the season, Metzen declared, "It feels like I could win more tournaments this summer." Rating MJT tournaments a perfect 10 out of 10, Metzen exclaimed, "I want more tournaments!" With his enthusiasm and dedication, it looks like the summer forecast is set for plenty of golfing fun.

Derek Zhao, a 10-year-old from Maple, ON, has done it again—securing his third consecutive MJT win. "Before this tournament, I prepared physically by practicing a lot of putting and long game," Zhao said. Despite his victory, Zhao added, "Even though I won, I missed some putts and I think I will practice more."

Bentley McNamara, 12, from Woodstock, ON, is on a winning streak, securing his third consecutive MJT tournament victory. When asked about his secret to success, McNamara shared, "I have been working very hard on my golf game on and off the course." He added, "This is my third MJT tournament win in a row, and it will really boost my confidence for my next tournaments." With McNamara's dedication and growing collection of trophies, he might need a bigger trophy shelf!
