Playoff caps off exciting MJT Mini Tour at Moon Lake

Saskatoon, SK – (July 27, 2021) – Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour held another wait-listed Mini Tour for 12U players in the fast-growing Saskatchewan junior golf scene the MJT Mini Tour presented by PGA of Saskatchewan at Moon Lake Golf and Country Club, in Saskatoon on July 26, which ran in conjunction with the two-day MJT Junior Tour event at the same facility. In total, 141 junior golfers were out competing on Monday, setting another record for the province.

The Mini Tour event witnessed some exciting highlights, including a tense playoff in the MJT Boys 11-12 Division after 12-year-old golfers Tryce Wallin, of Humboldt, SK, and Carter Moen, of Swift Current, SK, finished tied at the top of the leaderboard with scores of 81. Coming out victorious from the playoff was Wallin, who earned his first ever MJT Mini Tour win. “My brother came to watch me and that really helped me feel calm,” commented Wallin, who felt the support from family and friends through the competition and in the playoff. “I hit my irons the best today and it feels really good to get the win.” Moen had to settle for runner-up position while 11-year-old Matty Schmiess, of Swift Current, SK rounded out the podium in third place with a score of 82.

The largest division in the tournament, MJT Boys 9-10, saw a tight contest to the very end with eight-year-old Jun Lee coming out on top by a single shot. The Regina, SK, golfer fired a score of 74 to earn his second win in two years on the MJT Mini Tour in Saskatchewan. “I hit some god shots in the front nine which gave me confidence going into the back nine,” said Lee. “My short game really was what got me the win.” Pilot Butte, SK, golfer Austin Nesbitt, 10, finished as runner-up with a score of 75.

In the MJT Girls 11-12 Division, 11-year-old Yuna Lee, of Regina, SK, secured a two-shot victory with a score of 80. Lee, who has picked up two top-three finishes so far this year on the MJT Mini Tour in Saskatchewan, returned to the winner’s circle at Moon Lake Golf and Country Club. “My caddy really helped me to focus,” commented Lee. “I felt nervous going into the tournament but became confident after a couple of shots.” Saskatoon’s Grade Odnokon, 11, fired a round of 82 to finish the division in second place.

Eight-year-old Kipton Fenrich, of Saskatoon, SK, took hold of the title in the MJT Boys 8U Division with a score of 99. “My driving was the best,” commented Fenrich, who kept the ball in the fairway off the tee. “I tried to do my best and played pretty good at times.”
