MJT’s popular Mini Tour tees off with first 2021 Saskatchewan event in Regina

Regina, SK – (June 21, 2021) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour returned to Saskatchewan after a long delay to the commencement of the season due to COVID-19 restrictions with the MJT Mini Tour presented by PGA of Saskatchewan at Joanne Goulet Golf Course in Regina on June 20. The MJT Mini Tour in Saskatchewan has seen increasing popularity of this circuit for boys and girls ages 12 and under, and the Joanne Goulet venue saw a combination of players returning along with a number of new aspiring young golfers, all competing for titles in five age divisions.

Returning to the MJT Mini Tour in the Boys 11-12 Division was 11-year-old Shae Maunula of North Battleford, SK. Maunula, who began playing on the MJT in 2019, picked up his second Mini Tour win of his young career on Sunday recording a score of 71. “I feel really happy to win,” he said. “I played smart and safe and had a really good first tournament.”

Recording a score of 72 and picking up the win in the MJT Boys 9-10 Division was 10-year-old Austin Nesbitt of Pilot Butte, SK. Nesbitt is no stranger to the top of the MJT Mini Tour leaderboards as he earned four wins on the Mini Tour last year and picked up right where he left off. “I stayed focused and made some putts,” he commented Nesbitt. “I’m pretty happy to win a tournament on Father’s Day for my dad.”

In the MJT Girls 11-12 Division, 11-year-old Grace Odnokon, of Saskatoon, SK, shot a score of 82 to win first place. “I focused on my own shots and forgot about the bad ones,” Odnokon said. “I feel good that all my hard work paid off.”

Eight-year-old Kipton Fenrich, of Saskatoon, SK, began playing on the MJT Mini Tour in Saskatchewan last year and saw a steady stream of top results. Fenrich took it to the next level to start off the 2021 season earning his first MJT Mini Tour victory with a score of 89. “I drove the ball really well,” Fenrich stated. “I feel really good and happy and excited to win.”

Returning to the MJT Mini Tour in the Girls 8U Division was eight-year-old Sedona Weitz, of Calgary. After picking up two wins last year on the MJT Alberta Mini Tour circuit, Weitz began making her mark on the Saskatchewan circuit at Joanne Goulet, shooting a score of 83. “I had lots of fun and never gave up,” commented Weitz.

Full results can be viewed here. The next 12U event is the MJT Mini Tour presented by PGA of Saskatchewan at Elmwood Golf and Country Club in Swift Current on June 27. More details can be found on the website at www.maplejt.com.
