Javier and Rombouts take low overall in MJT’s Ambassador stop

Vancouver, BC – (August 9, 2021) – After Golf Canada’s Canadian Men’s Amateur made their stop over at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, ON, just a few days ago, Canada’s number-one played junior golf tour held a two-day tournament at the same venue, running the MJT Ontario Series at Ambassador Golf Club on August 7 and 8. Junior golfers were competing for titles in six divisions while also vying for valuable points on the MJT Order of Merit presented by RBC.

Low overall Boys score was shot by 14-year-old Matthew Javier in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division. Javier fired 71 and 72 (143) for a convincing seven shot lead, winning his first MJT title of the season and his third over the last three years. “The wind was challenging. My driver was responsible for the win,” said Javier, adding, “I feel relieved.” LaSalle, ON, golfer Jax Sisson, 15, fired rounds of 74 and 76 (150) to finish in the runner-up position.

Making the comeback for a two-shot win in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division and low overall Girls score was 17-year-old Karolyn Rombouts. The Florence, ON, golfer carded a pair of 77s (154) to come back after a day one two-shot deficit and win the title. Rombouts, who has travelled across Canada to MJT events in the past, surged to the top of the podium in Windsor with her performance at Ambassador Golf Club. Runner-up was Amherstburg, ON, golfer Kyla Charlebois, 17, who recorded scores of 79 and 77 (156).

Zach Burt of Guelph, ON, completed the comeback in the MJT Junior Boys Division to earn his second win of the season. The 18-year-old golfer shot 75 and 72 (147), coming back from a three-shot deficit to win the division by two shots. “I made a small swing change right before the tournament and trusted that through the competition,” commented Burt on finding his rhythm. “I was struggling with my confidence coming into the tournament, but after my lesson with my coach, Dave Smallwood, he helped me trust my game again and get me the win.” Komoka, ON, resident Brent Schidowka, 17, recorded scores of 72 and 77 (149) to finish the division in second place.

The MJT Bantam Boys winner was 14-year-old Cameron Wanlin, of Komoka, ON, who shot rounds of 73 and 74 (147) to win the division in convincing fashion. Wanlin’s performance at Ambassador Golf Club marked a confidence boost for the young golfer who was looking to turn his season around. “I felt good coming into the tournament as I was prepared by having a yardage book and played a practice round the day before,” Wanlin said. “I felt good after I got the win because my season wasn't going too well, so I am glad that I was able to win a MJT this year as the competition is usually tough. I would say that hitting greens in regulation was a big factor in my win. Also, I was focusing on staying calm after a bad shot and always taking my time no matter what kind of shot I was faced with.” Runner-up was William McEachern, 14, of Melbourne, ON (79, 79=158).

Jadelina Tep-Chhun, 14, of St. Thomas, ON, fired scores of 79 and 83 (162) to beat
Kassandra Rombouts, 13, of Florence, ON, for the MJT Girls U15 title. “I was a bit nervous since this was my first MJT tournament. After the win, I was really proud of myself but I definitely could've done better on the back nine on both rounds,” said Tep Chhun, who earned her first MJT title. “The course conditions were pretty tough, I was struggling a bit with my approach shots. I felt that my tee shots and my short putts really helped me throughout the rounds.”

Great scoring by 12-year-old Gabriel Yazdani, of London, ON, took him to the top in the MJT Peewee Boys Division. Yazdani fired rounds of 74 and 72 (146), showing his poise and consistency at Ambassador Golf Club. Over the last three years, Yazdani has been making the transition onto the MJT Junior Tour in Ontario, slowly climbing his way up the leaderboards and finally earning his first Junior Tour win last weekend.

The MJT is now currently in Markham for the MJT Ontario Series at Bushwood Golf Club on August 9 and 10. More information can be found on the MJT’s website at www.maplejt.com.
