Gilbart shoots low overall in MJT Mini Tour at Beaverdale Golf Club

Cambridge, ON – (August 2, 2020) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Mini Tour visited Cambridge, ON, on Saturday, August 1, marking the mid-way point of 2020 Ontario 12U season. With limited opportunities to qualify for the National Championship, junior golfers came out to compete under new health and safety protocols in the MJT Mini Tour at Beaverdale Golf Club.

The Low Overall score of the event went to 11-year old Lucas Gilbart, of Toronto, ON. Gilbart, who carded a 72 on the par-68 Beaverdale Golf Club to win the MJT Boys 11-12 title, said, “It feels great to win. I found fairways, hit greens, and two-putted or less.”

Brampton, ON-resident Francesca Ampil took home the title in the MJT Girls 11-12 Division. The 11-year old player fired an 80 to win by three shots. “The key to my victory was focus and determination,” stated Ampil, who finished third at the last MJT Mini Tour event at Turnberry Golf Club and has now climbed up the leaderboard to win at Beaverdale.

Kaprice Park, 10, of Oakville, ON, shot a great low round of 75. Park has had a successful campaign on the 2020 MJT ON Mini Tour circuit, now winning her second event of the year. “It’s a great accomplishment,” she said, when asked what the win meant to her. “I stayed out of trouble and kept the ball in play.”

The MJT Boys 9-10 Division saw a tie for first place between nine-year old Bryce Burridge, of London, ON, and 10-year old Owen Fong, of Toronto, with a score of 79. Fong crept out in front after nine holes of play, but Burridge came back to tie Fong playing his last three holes at even par.

Winning the MJT Boys 8U Division by retrogression was eight-year old Mason Garant of Windsor, ON, who fired an 85 to come back from a two-shot deficit with nine holes to play, tying for the lead with Weijian Lu, 7, of Markham, ON. “It feels like a relief to get the win,” commented Garant. “I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Kaeleigh Chung of Richmond Hill, ON, made it three straight victories in the MJT Girls 8U Division on Saturday. The eight-year old fired a 99 to take the division title. Chung, who gave some credit to her caddy for keeping her mental game in check, commented, “My Caddy really helped me a lot to stay focused on each shot.”

Full results of the event can be viewed here. The next 12U event in Ontario is the MJT Mini Tour Summer Series at Turnberry Golf Club in Brampton on August 10. More information can be found online at www.maplejt.com.
