Strang’s 64 and a playoff highlight MJT Mini Tour at Meadowlands Golf Club

Sylvan Lake, AB – (July 27, 2020) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour made its way to the scenic town of Sylvan Lake, AB, on Sunday, July 26, for the U13’s MJT Mini Tour at Meadowlands Golf Club at Sylvan Lake. With gorgeous weather and ideal golfing conditions, the Mini Tour players set the stage for the Junior Tour event that follows at the same facility on July 27 and 28.

Ten year-old Chase Strang, of Airdrie, AB, won the title in the MJT Boys 9-10 Division with a great score of 64. Strang has consistently climbed up the leaderboards this year on the MJT Mini Tour. He began with a fifth-place finish at Blue Devil Golf Club, moved up to second at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort, and entered the winner’s circle at Meadowlands Golf Club. “My short game was the key to victory,” commented Strang after his round. “It feels awesome to win!”

It took extra holes to determine a winner in the MJT Boys 11-12 Division. After 18 holes, Banff, AB, golfer Charles Greaves, 11, and High River, AB, golfer River Rommens, 12, sat tied with scores of 85. Greaves took a four-shot lead over Rommens after nine holes but Rommens persevered through the back nine to force a playoff.  With solid performances from both players, it was Greaves who emerged victorious, carding his first career MJT Mini Tour win. “I focused on my own game and not anyone else’s,” remarked Greaves. “It feels good to win my division.”

Rocky Mountain House, AB, resident Saylar May went two-for-two taking home the win in the MJT Girls 11-12 Division. The 11-year old golfer just came off her recent victory at the MJT Mini Tour at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort and fired a 77 to bring her winning streak to two events. “It feels good when everything comes together,” commented May. “It means my hard work has paid off.”

Ten year-old Serin Gerard, of Red Deer, AB, held on to a two-shot lead to win the MJT Girls 9-10 title with a score of 80. Tied with multiple players after nine holes of play, Girard kept her composure and stayed consistent to emerge on top. “My short game is most important to me,” commented Girard, when asked about the key to her performance and practice. “I love the MJT events and the people who run it.”

The MJT Boys 8U Division witnessed eight-year old Dalton Stephens fire an 80 to capture the title. The Craik, SK, golfer had some struggles at the beginning of his round but found his groove nicely and held on to that right to the finish. “The putter was working good today,” mentioned Stephens. “I stayed focused and had lots of fun.”

Seven-year old Sedona Weitz, of Calgary, AB, fired a 97 in the MJT Girls 8U Division. Weitz, who is in her first year of competing on the MJT Mini Tour, was pleased with her results and referred to her hard work and practice prior to the event.

Full results of the event can be viewed here. The next 13U stop in Alberta will be in Olds for the MJT Mini Tour Ford Series at Olds Central Highlands on August 9. This is the final opportunity for Alberta golfers under the age of 12 to qualify for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in British Columbia.
