Quilty low overall in MJT Humber College PGM Championship at Eagles Nest

Maple, ON – (August 2, 2020) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour made a stop in Maple, ON, on August 1 and 2, for the MJT Humber College PGM GTA Championship at Eagles Nest Golf Club. Continuing under new player health and safety protocols, junior golfers competed for titles in six divisions at the superb venue, battling a mixture of conditions including winds and rain.

The Humber College PGM Low Overall score came from Paul Quilty, 17, in the MJT Junior Boys Division. The Toronto, ON-golfer made four birdies and an eagle over the two-day event to fire 70 and 76 (146), winning by seven shots. “I kept the ball in the fairway and made all my short putts,” commented Quilty, who was pleased with how he took care of the “little things.” “It feels great to win and it was a great golf course.”

Aurora, ON’s Hunter Kolm inched out victory in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division. The 16-year old golfer shot 73 and 76 (149) to win the title by a single shot. Kolm, who has made occasional appearances on the MJT since 2017, has begun playing more on the Junior Tour over the last year and picked up his second career MJT win at Eagles Nest.

The MJT Bantam Boys Division witnessed an epic comeback from 13-year old Matthew Rastogi, of North York, ON. Rastogi carded an 82 on the first day to sit six shots back of the lead. On day two, however, Rastogi fired an incredible bogey-free 67 to surge to the top and win the division by five shots. “I just kept making birdie putts,” remarked Rastogi. “I never lost my momentum.”

Picking up his fourth MJT Junior Tour title of the year in the MJT Peewee Boys Division was 10-year old Eddie Gu. The Aurora resident carded 80 and 78 (158) to win by four shots. “I tried not to worry about what I couldn’t,” commented Gu, who kept his nerves in check throughout the event. “It feels good to win because the course was tough and [my competitors] challenged me.”

Hana Yoshida, 18, of Richmond Hill, ON, picked up her first 2020 MJT win in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division with scores of 80 and 79 (159). Yoshida sat one shot behind the lead after the first round and relied on her consistency and learning from her mistakes on day two to take home the Hoselton trophy. “I stayed focused and determined,” commented Yoshida. “I am proud of myself for winning.”

The MJT Girls U15 Division saw Michelle Xing, 12, shoot 77 and 86 (163) to win her third MJT title in five starts. The Richmond Hill, ON, player has made her mark in her first year on the MJT Junior Tour picking up three wins and not finishing outside the top three in any event. “My irons were pretty good for the most part,” said Xing, who took advantage of her strong approach game.

Full results of the event can be viewed here. The next stop in the province is the MJT Ontario Series at Rebel Creek Golf Club, taking place on August 8 and 9 in Petersburg. More information can be found online at www.maplejt.com.
