MJT PGA of Canada-SK Zone Junior Champions crowned at Moon Lake; West low overall

Saskatoon, SK – (July 22, 2020) - Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour members were privileged to compete on the perfectly manicured Moon Lake Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon this past July 20 and 21, in the MJT PGA of Canada - SK Zone Junior Championship.

The full field event, which operated under new health and safety protocols, had titles up for grabs in five divisions. Theoren West, 17, of Wawota, SK, picked up his second consecutive 2020 win, claiming the MJT-PGA of Canada-SK Zone Junior Boys Champion’s title after firing a 74 on the first day to sit six shots back of the lead. Day two saw West climb up the leaderboard firing a 70 (144) and winning by four shots. “I took advantage of some of the easier holes,” commented West afterwards. “I stayed patient and didn’t make any big mistakes. It feels good to win again!”

The Juvenile Boys Division saw an extremely tight leaderboard where two shots separated the top five players. 16-year old Chase Pochylko, of Saskatoon, SK, carded a 75 on the first day to sit four shots back of the lead. Persevering through the second day, Pochylko made four birdies in his first 10 holes on his way to a 72 (147) and a one-shot victory to be crowned MJT-PGA of Canada-SK Zone Juvenile Boys Champion. “I played high percentage shots,” commented Pochylko, who had a conservative game plan for the event. “It means a lot to win.”

Emerging as MJT-PGA of Canada-SK Zone Bantam Boys Champion with a two-shot victory was 14-year old Max Regier. The Saskatoon-native carded scores of 72 and 74 (146) to win his second MJT title of the year. “I am proud of myself and happy I could hold on for the win,” commented Regier, who struggled to close his second round but made a key birdie on the final hole. “I was trying to not get too aggressive off the tee and just keep the ball in play.”

The Peewee Boys Division witnessed Elias Haukeness, 12, break out of runner-up position to win his first MJT title of the year, MJT-PGA of Canada-SK Zone Peewee Boys Champion. The Buena Vista golfer has fared well this season finishing second place in both previous events, but finally made his way to the very top of the podium firing rounds of 81 and 84 (165). “I hit my driver straight,” said Haukeness, when asked about the strengths of his game. “It means a lot to win as it’s my first one.”

Hallie Crozier, 15, fired 97 and 96 (193) in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division. The Regina junior golfer just began competing on the MJT this year with Moon Lake marking only her second event of her career. “I’ve been working really hard on my driver,” commented Crozier. “I feel more confident now and know that I can have a better competition next time.”

Full results of the event can be viewed here. The next Saskatchewan Junior Tour stop will take place on August 6 and 7 with the MJT Re/Max Blue Chip Realty Classic at Estevan Woodlawn Golf Club in Estevan.
