Mayner's eight-under wins low overall in MJT’s Okanagan stop presented by PLYR Golf

Kelowna, BC – (July 25, 2020) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour concluded its July run in the interior of British Columbia making its second and final stop in Kelowna with the MJT Interior Swing presented by PLYR Golf at Okanagan Golf Club on July 23 and 24. Under the new player health and safety protocols, a full field of top junior golfers from BC and Alberta competed for titles in six divisions and many got a preview of the Bear Course in anticipation for the coveted BC Amateur, Mid-Am, and Junior tournaments that will take place in a few days.

The spotlight of the event fell on Kelowna-native Kyle Mayner who put on a scoring clinic at his home track. The 17-year old junior golfer made 12 birdies over the two-days, blazing around the course with scores of 69 and 67 (136) to win the MJT Junior Boys title by six shots and take home the Low Overall Boys score. “I was happy with the way I struck the ball,” commented Mayner, who claimed to have missed only four greens in regulation throughout the event. “I stuck to my game plan and it’s great to see my hard work pay off.”

15-year old Cooper Humphreys completed the interior sweep in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division. The Kelowna player, after taking home first-place title at the earlier MJT junior tour event at Predator Ridge Resort in Vernon, continued his momentum at the Okanagan Club by recording his third MJT win of the 2020 season. Humphreys rode the birdie train most of the event making 10 birdies and an eagle on his way to rounds of 70 and 68 (138) and a three-shot win. “My game was pretty solid all around,” he commented. “I wanted to trust every shot and play with no fear.”

Tate Bruggeman, 13, of Edmonton, AB, won the Hoselton trophy in the MJT Bantam Boys Division with scores of 70 and 71 (141). Bruggeman had a solid first round making six birdies and finishing with a one-shot lead. He continued his great performance through the second round, adding three more birdies and an eagle to win by four shots. “I was trying to hit lots of fairways and greens and keep the ball in play,” mentioned Bruggeman. “There was no single part of my game that stood out, but my putting was pretty solid.”

15-year old MJT veteran champion Erin Lee also completed the Okanagan sweep by winning her second consecutive 2020 MJT title. The Langley, BC, player fired rounds of 70 and 72 (142) to win the MJT Girls 15-19 Division and Low Overall Girls score for the event. “I think my game got better after I dropped a couple of putts,” commented Lee, who was able to find her groove at the Okanagan Golf Club. “I tried to keep things steady and not force anything out there.” Lee left BC’s interior with two first-place trophies and will be looking to continue putting her name on the top of MJT leaderboards.

The beat goes on for 14-year old Yeji Kwon who picked up her fourth MJT win of the 2020 season in the MJT Girls U15 Division. The Port Coquitlam, BC, resident shot 72 and 74 (146) to win her division in convincing fashion. “My game plan was to stay calm and positive,” commented Kwon, who executed that strategy perfectly. “I feel very happy and honored to win for the first time in Kelowna.”

The consistency of 11-year old Jaden August propelled him to victory in the MJT Peewee Boys Division. The Pitt Meadows, BC, junior golfer carded 75 and 76 (151) to win his division by eight shots. “My chipping and putting were really good,” said August. “I feel really happy to win such a competitive event.” August, who has hovered around the top of the leaderboards on the MJT BC Junior and Mini Tours all season, found his way to the top of the podium with his performance at the Okanagan Golf Club.

Full results from the event can be viewed here. The next junior tour stop in BC will take place on July 30 and 31 in Surrey with the MJT Ford Series at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club. More information can be found online at www.maplejt.com.
