Kwon’s 68, 69 lights up MJT Fall Series at Golden Eagle Golf Club

Pitt Meadows, BC – (September 21, 2020) – Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour continued the final stretch of its British Columbia schedule on September 19 and 20 in Pitt Meadows with the MJT Fall Series at Golden Eagle Golf Club. Players competed for titles in six divisions on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, all while battling a plethora of weather conditions. The first day brought heavy rain and gusting wind with players scrambling to finish their rounds in the daylight; the second day enjoyed sunshine and heat, making for perfect scoring conditions.

A brilliant performance by 14-year old Yeji Kwon played out in the MJT U15 Girls Division, where she fired blistering rounds of 68 and 69 (137). The Port Coquitlam star golfer earned her sixth MJT win of the condensed season in BC. “I really wanted to reach my goal for this [competition],” commented Kwon. “I think I had a good mindset and enjoyed playing with my group members.”

Playing up a division was 13-year old Vanessa Zhang, of Vancouver, BC, who won the Hoselton trophy for MJT Girls 15-19. Zhang shot great scores of 73 and 69 (142), making only one bogey in her final round to win the title by four shots. “My putting was solid throughout,” she commented. “I loved how diverse the field was and playing with great friends.”

After being tied for the lead going in to day two, 12-year old Alex Zhang, of Richmond, BC, took it low to win the MJT Peewee Boys title, finishing with excellent rounds of 72 and 70 (142) for a four-shot victory over two other players. “It feels great to win another MJT title this year,” commented Zhang, who is no stranger to the top of the MJT leaderboards. “These [events] are very fun and competitive.”

Vancouver’s Ryan Liang, 13, held on in the MJT Bantam Boys Division to win by a single shot. Liang opened the competition with an outstanding round of 66, giving him a solid cushion going into round two. Struggling to find his game in the second round, Liang fired a 78 to hold off multiple charges from behind and took home the Hoselton trophy. “Shooting 66 on the first day was key,” he stated.

MJT veteran champion Danny Im, 16, inched out victory in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division. The Langley, BC, golfer fired 67 and 76 (143) to win the title by one stroke. “I wasn’t playing that great today,” commented Im after his second round. “I’m happy that I stayed calm, hit the shots I needed to, and hoped for the best.”

The MJT Junior Boys Division witnessed 17-year old Adrian Murray come back to take the title by three shots. The Delta, BC, player fired scores of 71 and 79 (150) for his first MJT win. “My key to victory this week would be my putting,” commented Murray, who leaned on his ability to scramble and get up-and-down both days. “It feels good to win my division because I battled hard and I did everything I could to hold on to the lead [at the end].”

Full results from the event can be viewed here.  The final junior tour event on the BC schedule is the wait-listed MJT Ford Series at Mayfair Lakes Golf Club in Richmond, which will take place October 3 and 4. For more information, please visit the website at www.maplejt.com.
