Lew goes low, and other highlights from MJT Mini Tour at Merry-Hill

Breslau, ON – (May 20, 2019) – A field of young golfers aged 12 and under put on a show at the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Mini Tour stop at Merry-Hill Golf Club in Breslau this past Saturday, May 18. Boys and girls competed for titles in five divisions as well as for spots in three major international tournaments to be held later this summer: the Future Champions Golf Callaway World Championship, the IMG Academy Junior World Championship, and the US Kids Golf World Championship.

10-year-old Markham, ON, native, Dawson Lew, prevailed in the MJT Boys 9-10 division with a strong round of 68. Lew’s round included two eagles and four birdies on his way to a four-shot win over Gabriel Yazdani, 10, (72). “I thought the tournament was fun and the course was challenging,” commented Lew. “The moment I knew I was going to win was after I made a seven-foot putt on 17.”

11-year old, Riley Bauer, of Waterloo, ON, won the MJT Boys 11-12 Division in nail-biting fashion. Bauer shot 95 to claim his division title by one shot over 12-year old, Eddie McDonald, of Elora, ON. “I’m happy I won and I’m looking forward to the next event,” commented Bauer who was introduced to the MJT by his older brother.

Eight-year old, Karuna Doulat, of Brampton, ON, fired a round of 86 to win the MJT Boys U8 Division by four shots over seven-year old, Dustin Zhao, of Maple, ON. With two birdies on his front nine, Doulat cruised in the back nine to claim the trophy. “What won me the tournament was my driving and my putting,” said Doulat, who was consistent off the tee and made some clutch saves to get him the win.

Winning by retrogression in the MJT Girls 9-10 Division after tying for the lead at 84 with Oakville, ON native, Anum Manzoor, 10, was Shauna Liu, 10, of Maple, ON whose round included three birdies. Liu said afterwards, “I was happy with my overall game, but I know there’s lots more work to do.”

The MJT Girls 11-12 Division was captured by Oakville, ON native, Swetha Sathish, 11, who fired a round of 76, good enough to win both her division and the Low Overall Girls score. Attributing her win to her positive attitude, Sathish remarked, “I made a lot of pars and I stayed consistent.” Finishing second in the division was 11-year old, Sophie Weber, of Burlington, ON who shot 88.

Full results including PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners are posted on the MJT website here.  The next MJT Mini Tour stop in Ontario is in Puslinch at Victoria Park Valley Golf Club. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
