Kwon goes low, playoff highlights MJT Manitoba Mini Tour in Winnipeg

Winnipeg, MB – (May 27, 2019) – Young golfers aged six to 12 competed for titles in six divisions at the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Mini Tour at The Players Course in Winnipeg on Sunday, where they also stood a chance of earning spots in the 2019 FCG Callaway World Championship and the 2019 FCG International Championship in California later this summer.

11-year old, Winnipeg, MB-player, Dohyoung Lee shot 96 and captured her first win of the 2019 season in the MJT Girls 11-12 Division by eight shots over 11-year old, Brandon, MB-player, Callie Rice. “I couldn’t believe I won,” exclaimed Lee after her round. Attributing her win to her short game, Lee also said, “I was happy with the way I chipped and putted because I’ve been practicing that lately.” She knows that it’s how you play around the greens that wins championships.

Shooting the low round of the entire tournament (albeit each division played from different yardages) was 10-year old, Yeeun Kwon, of Winnipeg, MB, who carded five birdies on her way to a 74, winning the MJT Girls 9-10 title. With ambitions of playing golf professionally once she’s older, Kwon told us, “I’m so excited to come in first place and this is the first step to becoming a professional golf player.” We will all be watching Kwon as she grows and continues to play golf at an elite level. Coming in second in the division was 9 year-old Brandon, MB-player, Payton Bailey, who shot 108.

Six-year old Maisy Shewchuk took home the trophy (119) in the MJT Girls U8 Division. The Oakbank, MB-native, who is just beginning her golf career, took a lot of confidence from her play in this tournament. “I’m really happy and excited,” said Shewchuk. “My driving was the best part of my game as I hit lots of fairways.”

It came down to the last hole in the MJT Boys U8 Division where an 18th hole birdie from eight-year old Ryder St. Laurent, of Ile Des Chenes, MB (94), secured the win over eight-year old, Xavier Delaquis of Winnipeg, MB (97). “I knew we were tied going into 18,” said St. Laurent. “I made a nice birdie on 18 to win and made some great friends along the way.”

In the MJT Boys 9-10 Division, an exciting tie finish at a score of 95 took place between Steinbach, MB-resident, Ty Brewster, 10, and LA Salle, MB-resident, Gavin Carver, 10. Carver, who trailed by two shots going into the final hole, made a key birdie putt to force a playoff after Brewster missed his par. Coming out on top at the end, however, was Brewster, who took home the trophy. “I always have lots of fun at these [MJT] events. I love competing against players my age and the pizza is always great.”

Winnipeg, MB-native, Trent Raymundo, 12, shot 95 in the MJT Boys 11-12 Division to take the title, citing his approach shots onto the green as the key. Raymundo indicated that he loves to compete and will be playing more tournaments this summer.

Full results including PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners are posted on the MJT website here. International exemptions will be announced once players accept their invitations.

The next MJT Mini Tour stop in Manitoba is at Maplewood Golf Club in St.Pierre-Jolys on June 15. To register or for more information, please visit www.maplejt.com.
