Great showing from wait-listed field for MJT Mini Tour at River Bend

Red Deer, AB – (June 10, 2019) – The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour continued its 12U Mini Tour’s Alberta series on June 8 at River Bend Golf Club in Red Deer, where a wait-listed field of young golfers ages seven through 11 competed for titles in six divisions as well as direct exemptions into the 2019 Future Champions Golf (FCG) International Championship in San Diego, CA, later this summer.

The event was run concurrently with the two-day Junior Tour’s MJT Alberta Series for players ages 12 to 23, and altogether there was a combined number of 111 young golfers out competing during the weekend. The Junior Tour results are detailed in a separate release.

Starting with the MJT Boys 11-12 Division, Innisfail, AB-resident, Brae Rogalczyk, 11, shot the low round of the tournament (72) to capture the title. “I made birdie on the ninth and tenth holes and that got me into a groove for the rest of my round,” said Rogalczyk who picked up his first win on the MJT Mini Tour since beginning to play in 2016. Finishing five shots behind in second place was Banff, AB-resident, Macsen Hempstead, 11.

In the MJT Boys 9-10 Division, Jayden Zhang shot 78 to win by six shots over Prashant Bala (84). Both players are aged nine and from Edmonton, AB. Zhang, who just began playing on the MJT Mini Tour this year, secured his first win in two starts. “I feel delighted and filled with happiness to have won my first tournament,” said Zhang, who claims to be getting into golf more and is expected to play a full season on the MJT Mini Tour this year.

Eight-year old Bennett Love, of Red Deer, took a convincing win in the MJT Boys U8 Division with a round of 78. Love, who thought the course was playing quite challenging, said, “I’m pumped about winning this tournament, especially because the golf course was playing hard.” Finishing second was eight-year old Kieran McArthur, of Edmonton, who shot an 87.

The MJT Girls U8 title was won via a countback by eight-year old Aleah Shields-Rodipe of Calgary, AB, after she tied for the lead with a score of 78 with fellow eight-year old Alessandra Sundquist, also of Calgary. Shields-Rodipe said, “I’m really glad and happy to win this event and it’s giving me more confidence to play better.”

Nine-year old Eileen Park of Red Deer picked up her second 2019 MJT Mini Tour win of the season capturing the MJT Girls 9-10 title with a score of 74. Park, who has been playing on the MJT since 2016, remarked after collecting her trophy, “My putting was the reason I won today; I was able to lag some long putts close to the hole.” Runner-up was Ellie Johnson, 10, of Edmonton, who shot a 79.

Edie Nicholson, 12, of Calgary, shot an 84 to win the MJT Girls 11-12 Division. Nicholson, who was playing in her first MJT Mini Tour event of her young golf career, says this win will motivate her to improve her game further. “I didn’t play my best game, but I still hit some good shots and I know that I can do better next time.”

Full results including PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners are posted on the MJT website here; winners of international exemptions will be notified shortly. The next MJT Mini Tour stop in Alberta is in Calgary at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club on July 14, and registration is online at www.maplejt.com.
