MJT Atlantic Canada Order of Merit Winners announced

Wallace, NS - (August 29, 2019) - The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held its final event of the Atlantic Canada 2019 season on August 27 and 28 in Wallace, NS. With valuable Order of Merit points on the line for members, a top field of golfers from across the Maritime provinces competed for titles in seven divisions at the MJT Humber College PGM Atlantic Championship at Fox Harb’r Resort. This 36-hole tournament was also the last chance for players to punch their ticket to the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at the Reunion Resort in Florida this November.

An unbelievable performance by Owen Mullen, 16, in the MJT Juvenile Boys division left everyone in awe. The Truro, NS-player carded scores of 66 and 69 which included a tournament-high 13 birdies and an eagle. Mullen, who played the front nine even par both days, tore apart the back nine at Fox Harb’r, shooting 30 on the first day and 33 on the second. “My driving was pretty good all tournament,” mentioned Mullen. “Everything just seemed to click and I was just trying to make as many birdies as possible.” Dartmouth, NS-resident, Jake Smith, 16, finished runner-up in the division (73-76=149). Smith’s performance in this tournament as well as the rest of the season earned him a third-place finish in the MJT Atlantic Canada Juvenile Boys Order of Merit standings.

Solid scores of 74 and 75 (149) from Bedford, NS’s Logan Tramble, helped him earn his first win of 2019. The 18-year-old player said, “My putting was really good for the most part. I made a lot of good putts in the middle of my rounds that led to my win.” Mark Chandler (78, 75), 17, of Chester, NS, and Justin Caron (74, 79), 17, of Summerside, PEI, finished tied for second place with a total score of 153 over the two days.

Simon Mullen, 13, of Truro, joined his brother Owen as a Hoselton trophy winner after he shot 80 and 75 (155) in the MJT Bantam Boys division to win his second 2019 title in as many starts. Mullen came back from a five-shot deficit after the first round. “I was just thinking about making pars down the stretch,” he said, when asked about his thoughts at the end. Jacob LeBlanc, 13, of Dieppe, NB, took home a second-place finish with scores of 78 and 79 (157), enough to earn a spot into the National Championship with his MJT Atlantic Canada Bantam Boys Order of Merit title.

Zachary Gaudet, 12, of Truro, had a convincing win in the MJT Peewee Boys division, firing rounds of 81 and 78 (159). “My iron play was the strongest part of my game,” remarked Gaudet. Runner-up was Drew Keiver, 12, of Dartmouth, NS (95, 94).

The Low Overall Girls score for the tournament went to Abbey Baker in the MJT Girls U15 division. The 14-year-old rising star from Halifax, NS, finished with scores of 76 and 74 (150) and finishes the year with a 79.00 scoring average and a second-place finish in the Order of Merit race. “I was really working on staying in the moment,” commented Baker. “I tried to take things shot by shot and not get ahead of myself.”

Mackenzie Deveau, of Moncton, NB, was able to breakthrough after three consecutive runner-up finishes and win the MJT Girls 15-18 division with scores of 83 and 77 (160). Deveau also took home the MJT Atlantic Canada Girls 15-18 Order of Merit title and earned an invitation to the National Championship. “I just told myself to keep hitting solid shots and making putts down the stretch,” commented Deveau. Alexandra Guitard, 17, of Moncton, NB, finished second in both the division and in the year-long Order of Merit race, shooting scores of 88 and 79 (167), an impressive nine-stroke improvement between the two rounds.

In the MJT Collegiate division, 20-year-old, Luke Reeves-Rollins, of Charlottetown, PEI, won the title with scores of 77 and 76 (153)  over John Munroe, 21, of Halifax, NS.
