Ross rules at MJT’s rain-shortened stop in Carman

Carman, MB - (June 10, 2019) - After a storm prevented play on day one of the June 8 and 9 tournament on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour in Carman, MB, day two was a beautiful sunny day and the course was in great shape for the MJT Manitoba Series at Carman Golf Club. Play was shortened to 18 holes for the juniors, who were competing for titles in six divisions as well as for spots in the US Kids World and Teen Championships and the FCG Callaway World Golf Championship.

Out for his first event of the year and headlining the action was Winnipeg, MB-player Trey Ross, 15, who fired a 70 to win Low Overall and the MJT Juvenile Boys title. Finishing second in the division was another Winnipeg player, Carter Johnson, 16, who scored 73. Johnson got off to a hot start making birdie on the first hole, but it was the Trey Ross show after that. Ross went on to make five birdies, three of them coming on his last six holes, on his way to victory. “I’m just happy the putter was hot,” said Ross who takes home his first MJT title. “I drained a soft putt on 15 and a birdie putt on 18 and that was the win.”

Hayden Delaloye, 13, of Neepawa, MB, took home the title in the MJT Bantam Boys Division with a 76 that included five birdies, three of which also came in his final six holes. Delaloye, coming off a playoff win at the MJT season opener in Manitoba one month ago, commented, “It feels great to win back-to-back tournaments. I know everyone is going to be coming after me at the next event and so this motivates me to really work on my game and come back an even better player.” Rounding out the division in second place just two shots back was Winnipeg resident, Jack Taylor, 13, who made two birdies and an eagle on the last hole on his way to a 78.

Capturing the Hoselton trophy in the MJT Peewee Boys Division was 12-year old, Carson Inman, from Portage La Prairie, MB, who shot 79. Inman, who finished third at the MJT Manitoba Season Opener, climbed up the leaderboard this time around to take a five-shot win over Brandon, MB-native, Spence Mott (84), 12, and Winnipeg-native, Terence Rafferty (84), 12. “I feel really good about winning,” said Inman who picked up his first MJT win. “I’m happy with my score and I can’t wait to get better.”

Owen Gillespie, 18, of Portage La Prairie, MB, came out on top in the MJT Junior Boys Division firing a score of 75. Gillespie, who birdied both par fives at Carman Golf Club, mentioned, “I was able to take advantage of the par fives playing them two-under par for the tournament.” Gillespie, who has a full tournament schedule planned for the summer, added, “This win is the way I wanted to start my summer golf season and I’m hoping to build off it for the future.” Coming second in the division was Eric Strick, 17, of Winnipeg, who fired an 80 to finish five shots behind.

In the MJT Girls U15 Division, Jeri-Ann LaFleche, 12, of Winnipeg, took home the Hoselton trophy with a five-shot win over Armaan Dhillon, 13, of Winnipeg. LaFleche (97), who finished third at the MJT Manitoba Season Opener, stepped up at this event to win her third career MJT tournament, attributing her win to her work on the greens. “My putting was pretty good all day; I made a couple of long putts including a 30-footer.”

The MJT Collegiate Division was captured by Noah Goertzen, 19, of Homewood, MB. Homewood, who carded an 84 to take the win and said after his round, “It felt good to play and win even though the weather shortened the event.” This was a first career MJT tournament win for Goertzen, who has been playing on the MJT for six years.
