Arsenault, Hogan, Gauvin qualify for NTC at MJT’s Fox Creek stop

Dieppe, NB.- (August 23, 2018) – Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour stopped at Fox Creek Golf Club in Dieppe, NB, on August 21 and 22, where players were competing for titles in six divisions as well as the chance to qualify for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Team Atlantic in the National Team Challenge Matches (NTC) presented by Freedom 55 Financial at Royal Niagara Golf Club in Niagara Falls this September.

The male spots on the team went to Pierre-Luc Arsenault, 15, Saint-Louis, NB, and Nathan Hogan, 16, of Miramichi, NB, after they placed first and second in MJT Juvenile Boys division. Arsenault, who shot 77, 75 (152) to edge Hogan by one stroke for the title, said, “I feel great (about winning). The 18th hole was my favourite hole – my thoughts were to just hit the ball straight and try to avoid a bogey.” He continued, “My goal is to improve my game and gain more experience in tournaments.”

In the MJT Junior Boys division, Andrew MacDonald, 18, of Fredericton, NB (77, 77=154) took home the Hoselton trophy with a six shot victory over Sam McNeill, 17, of Summerside, PE (76, 84=160). “I’m very pleased, it was a good two days, and I didn’t snap hook it off the final tee,” said MacDonald. “I like the way MJT run things, set up the course fair. It’s well organized,” he added.    

Thomas Sutherland, 14, of Hammonds Plains, NS, fired rounds of 77, 84 (161) from the bantam tees to win the MJT Bantam Boys title by three strokes over Benjamin Childs, 14, of Halifax, NS (80-84=164). “This is my first time winning a MJT tournament so I feel lots of relief – its awesome,” Sutherland said. “I’ve played MJT for a few years and it has been so fun to this day – I love playing these.”

In the MJT Peewee Boys division, Simon Mullen, 12, of Truro, NS ran away with the victory after shooting very impressive rounds of 76, 75 (151). Mullen was victorious over Chase Burgess, 11, of Petitcodiac, NB, who finished as the runner-up (82, 87=169). Mullen knew he had a sizeable lead going into the final stretch of holes and standing on the 18th tee at three over par for the day, he thought to himself, “I just need to make a par.” Par is what he made, and he finished with a 75.

The MJT Girls 15-18 title was won in style by hometown favourite, Julie Gauvin, 16, of Dieppe, who shot 80, 85 (156) and qualified for the female spot on MJT Team Atlantic for the NTC in Niagara Falls. “I am very excited about winning because there were a lot of girls competing,” said Gauvin. “It’s at my home course and it’s nice to make my coach, Louis, proud,” she continued.

And finally, in the MJT Girls U15 division, Danielle Cumby, 14, of Canaan, NS, carded solid scores of 84, 86 (170) for a one-shot victory over Abbey Baker, 13, of Halifax (90, 81=171). “It’s pretty exciting because I had two really good days,” Cumby said, “and this was my first MJT tournament of the year.”

The final tournament in the region is the MJT Atlantic Canada Tour Championship presented by Humber College PGM at Fox Harb’r Resort in Wallace, NS, August 29 and 30. This will be the final opportunity for members to earn an invitation to the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at The Legacy Golf Club in Phoenix, AZ, this November.
