McLean Sisters Battle for MJT Medalist Honours at Ken-Wo

Wolfville, NS. (June 25, 2018) – The Boston Pizza presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s NSGA (Nova Scotia Golf Association) Player of the Year Series continued this past weekend at Ken-Wo Country Club in Wolfville, NS. Young golfers were competing for Hoselton trophies in seven different age categories, and for the chance to qualify for the International Players Championship presented by Miura Golf in Jasper, AB, as well as for MJT Team Canada to the JNJG International Junior Classic in Australia and to the Nordic Team Matches in Estonia.

MJT Collegiate Girls 19 – 23: Meghan McLean, 19, of Port Williams, NS and going into her sophomore year playing for the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, shot an outstanding two-day total of two-over-par, 142 (72, 70). “I played really well this weekend and I’ve been working hard on my game. It feels good to see my hard work paying off.” McLean was pushed hard by her younger sister Heather, who was two strokes back at 144 (71, 73), taking home her second trophy in the MJT Girls 15 – 18 division. “My best hole of the tournament was definitely the 16th hole of round two where I made eagle, thanks to an approach shot that ended up one-foot from the hole,” Heather McLean said. Runner-up in the division was Haley Baker, 16, of Halifax, NS, at 85-82 (167).

MJT Girls U15: Another two-time winner on the MJT Atlantic Canada circuit was 13-year-old Abbey Baker, of Halifax, NS. Baker, who won the first event of the summer at Truro Golf Club, shot rounds of 84, 79 to run away with the MJT Girls U15 title. “The highlight of my tournament came early, on the second hole of Round One where I almost got a Hole-In-One, but settled for a birdie.” Runner-up was Abby Wamboldt, 14, of Hammonds Plains, NS.

MJT Junior Boys 17 and 18: Teran Newell, 18, of Barrington, NS, was victorious yet again in the MJT Junior Boys division taking home his second Hoselton trophy of the 2018 season. Newell posted consecutive rounds of 75 for a three-shot victory over Andrew Cash, 17, of Upper Tantallon, NS. Newell’s birdie on the last hole sealed his victory. He said, “It feels great (to win). It was a close battle all weekend long. Thankfully I was able to make enough birdies to cover my mistakes.”

MJT Juvenile Boys 15 and 16: The winner of the MJT Juvenile Boys division was 16 year old Mark Chandler of Chester, NS. Chandler fired a remarkable five-over-par, 145 (75, 70) to win by six shots over Owen Mullen, 14, of Truro, NS (78, 73), who is playing up an age division. Chandler said, “It feels great to win. There was some tough competition, which is always nice because I get to see where my game stacks up.”

MJT Bantam Boys 13 and 14: Division winner Gavin Ives, 13, of Middle Sackville, NS, fired rounds of 79, 77 (156) to beat three players who all tied for second place three shots back - Owen Canavan and Thomas Sutherland, both 14 from Hammonds Plains, N, and Cale MacLaughlin, 14, of New Glasgow, NS. Ives credits his win to the birdie he made on the 10th hole which “really helped turn things around.”

MJT Peewee Boys 12U: It took the first playoff of the season for Simon Mullen, 12, of Truro, NS, to beat fellow 12 year-old Max Baldwin, of Hammonds Plains, NS, on the second playoff hole, for the MJT Peewee Boys title. Both boys had finished with a two-day total of 163, 12 shots clear of third place. Mullen said, “It feels good (to win). I always play this tour.”

In addition to the division champions featured above, overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website here showing winners of the PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and MJT Comeback Award, as well as the current Academy Order of Merit standings.
