Burt battles Bulau at MJT’s Batteaux Creek stop

Nottawa, ON. - (July 30, 2018) – Players on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour took their talents to Batteaux Creek Golf Club in Nottawa, ON, July 28 and 29, for the MJT Ontario Summer Series event, where Hoselton trophies were awarded in seven different age divisions, and players selected to join MJT Team Ontario in the National Team Challenge presented by Freedom 55 Financial at Royal Niagara Golf Club in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, September 23 to 25.

Low overall score was posted in the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division, where the title came down to the very last hole. Zach Burt, 15, of Guelph, ON, and Kiefer Bulau, 15, of King City, ON, battled hard all 36 holes to see who would be crowned champion, and after matching 75’s in the opening round, each recorded a front-9, 35, to remain deadlocked after 27 holes. Burt’s two birdies in the last three holes proved to be too much for Bulau as Burt came away with the one-shot victory, shooting 75, 70 (145). Bulau finished runner-up with scores of 75, 71 (146).

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Sean Tippin, 17, of Waterloo, ON took home the MJT Junior Boys title with consecutive sub-80 rounds of 78, 73 (151). Tippin beat runner-up, Yashin Kapadia, 17, of Brampton, ON, by seven shots after Kapadia finished with scores of 83, 75 (158).

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: Landon Underhill, 14, of Aylmer, ON, won the MJT Bantam Boys division after firing rounds of 76, 73 (149). Underhill distanced himself from the field with three birdies in his last five holes. Runner-up in the division was Ethan Szabo, 14, of St. George, ON, who was five shots back (78, 76 = 154).

MJT Peewee Boys 12U: Top finisher in the MJT Peewee Boys division was Austin Mak, 11, of Mississauga, ON. Mak opened the tournament with an 82, but his second round 74 for a total score of 156 was especially impressive and helped contribute to his 13 shot victory over Ben De Castro, 12, of Toronto, ON (88, 81 = 169).

MJT U15 Girls: Bo Brown, 14, from Mississauga, won the MJT U15 Girls division in convincing fashion over fellow competitor Jamie Roslyn Camero, 12, of Dubai, UAE. Brown was very consistent throughout the event recording the only two scores under 80 in her age group, 77, 78 (155). “I feel great about the win,” Brown said. “I played well and it’s nice to see my hard work paying off.”

MJT 15-18 Girls: Manuela Rincon, 16, of Waterloo, ON took home the Hoselton Trophy in the Girls 15-18 division by a total of 10 strokes over Madison Ouellette, 15, of Orangeville, ON. Rincon made four birdies during round two on her way to a great score of one-over-par, 73, after posting 80 in the opening round (73, 80 = 153). Ouellette finished alone in second place with rounds of 86, 77 (163).

MJT Collegiate division: In the MJT Collegiate division, a new division designed to give competitive golfers an opportunity to keep their game sharp during the summer months while home from University, 19-year-old Luc Gagnon, of Oro-Medonte, ON, came out to shoot 82, 78 (160) from a challenging 6,768 yards.

Rincon and Burt were the eligible qualifiers for MJT Team Ontario in the National Team Challenge presented by Freedom 55 Financial, which will see six-player teams from across the Country in a three-day collegiate-style competition where the low four of six scores count towards the team aggregate each day. Full results and highlights from the MJT Ontario Summer Series at Batteaux Creek Golf Club are posted online here, showing winners of the PLYR Long Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions, and MJT Comeback Awards, and more.

The next stop on the MJT Ontario schedule is the MJT Copetown Classic at Copetown Woods Golf Club in Copetown, ON, August 11 and 12.  The following weekend, August 18 and 19, the tour shifts to Maple, ON, for the MJT / PGA of Ontario GTA Series at Eagles Nest Golf Club, a bonus MJT Order of the Merit points event.
