Hoydalo Hoists Hoselton Trophy At MJT ‘s Bel Acres Stop

Winnipeg, MB - (June 28, 2018) – The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Manitoba season continued on June 27 and 28 at the Bel Acres Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This was the final qualifier across the country for shortlisted positions on MJT Team Canada to both the Nordic Team Matches in Estonia and the JNJG International Junior Classic in Australia.

In a tightly contested MJT Junior Boys division, Wesley Hoydalo, 18, of Selkirk, MB, took home the Hoselton trophy as well as medalist honours for the tournament with a two-day total of 143 (72, 71). Only two shots back was Connor Stewart, 18, of Winnipeg, with two solid rounds of 74-71. “My play on the back-nine this week was the key to my success. I was a combined five-under, which proved to be the difference,” said Hoydalo.

The MJT Juvenile Boys division came down to the 36th hole with Neel Soni, 15, of Winnipeg, making birdie to finish with a two-day total of 154 (73, 81), securing a two-shot victory over Trey Ross, also 15, of Winnipeg, MB. Soni’s victory marked the second time in as many tries he’s won on the MJT this season. “It feels good to win back-to-back. I didn’t have my best stuff in the final round but I was able to get it done.”

The MJT Bantam Boys division also saw competitive golf right until the last putt. In the end, 14-year-old Jordan McDonald, of Winnipeg, was victorious by one stroke over Noah Fiks, 14, of Winnipeg, and Adam Ingram, 14, of West St. Paul, MB. “The 17th hole really helped me win this week. I birdied it both days,” said McDonald, who was down by three standing on the 17th tee in the final round.

Hayden Delaloye, 12, of Neepawa, MB, was able to secure his second win on the MJT this season by firing consecutive rounds of 83, good enough for an eight shot win over Jack Taylor, 12, of Winnipeg, in the MJT Peewee Boys division. Coming up the 18th hole in the final round, Delaloye tried to stay present and “to make sure every shot counted,” he said.

In the recently introduced MJT Collegiate division, Will Hydrochuk, 19, of La Salle, MB took home the Hoselton trophy with rounds of 76, 85 (161). He was followed by Nicholas Glesby, 19, of Winnipeg, at 173 (89, 84). In third place was female Brittany Young, 19, of Winnipeg, who fired a two-day total of 175 (86, 89).

Mikyla Albert, 16, of Selkirk, MB, shot rounds of 88, 86 (174) for an eight shot victory in the MJT Girls 15-18 division which also marks her first division win of 2018. Albert said, “I am very happy with the result. I enjoyed playing golf with the young ladies and the competition they offered.” Albert bested Hayley Shanks, 17, of Brandon, MB, who finished with a two-day total of 182 (88, 94).

In the MJT Girls U15 division, Jeri-Ann Lafleche, 11, of Winnipeg, came out to shoot 117-112, and said she was happy to par the 16th hole, and to finish well.

Event highlights are posted on the MJT website here, showing winners of the MJT ‘Comeback Award’, PLYR Long Drive and PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin. Finalists selected to the MJT Team Canada squads will be announced shortly.
