Over 70 juniors battle it out in MJT’s Lloydminster stop; Nagy low overall

Lloydminster, SK. (June 4, 2018) – Josh Nagy, 16, of Saskatoon, SK found his way back to the winner’s circle this weekend on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour in Lloydminster, SK, after he shot rounds of 76, 76 (152) on a challenging Lloydminster Golf and Country Club on June 2 and 3 for low overall and his second MJT Juvenile Boys title this season.

The weather was cool and windy all weekend and the tight, tree-lined golf course showed its teeth with above average scoring for the young competitors who were battling for Hoselton trophies in seven age divisions on the Boston Pizza-presented Tour, earning MJT Order of Merit points as well as points towards their Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit. Spots into the Future Champions of Golf World Championships as well as US Kids Golf World Championship were also available and finalists will be announced once qualifying completes across the country.

MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16:  Champion Josh Nagy’s 152 was six shots better than Nicholas Rimmer, 15, of Edmonton, AB, who ended at 158 (80, 78).  Nagy is riding high on confidence heading into this month’s Future Links Prairie Championship saying, “with the Future Links coming up, it feels great to get a win.”

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Logan Chernoff, 17, of Estevan, SK, made the most of his opportunities by capturing the MJT Junior Boy’s Hoselton trophy with a two-day total of 157 (78, 79). First round leader Griffin Wilson, 17, of Swift Current, SK, finished one-shot back in his attempt to win for the second time in as many weeks.

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: In a tightly contested MJT Bantam Boys division, Will Blake, 14, of Regina, SK, fought back for a one-stroke win over Jace Shannon, 13, of Forestburg, AB. Blake’s two-day total of 158 included a second round 77, which helped erase a five-shot deficit. He credits this win to the hard work he has put in on and off the course: “It feels good, I’ve put in lots of work and it paid off.”

MJT Peewee Boys 10-12: In the MJT Peewee Boys division, Tate Bruggeman, 11, of Edmonton, AB, fired rounds of 82 and 84 (166) for a nine-shot win over runner-up Darien Herlick, 12, of Weyburn, SK, and stated afterwards,  “I’m very proud about my win and I’m thankful to be able to play in so many amazing MJTs.”

MJT 15-18 Girls: Alyshia Suleman, 18, of Sherwood Park, AB, shot 86, 83 (169) which won the MJT 15-18 Girls division by six shots over Sarah Grieve, 15, of Saskatoon, SK. Suleman was impressive early in the second round. “I made back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes,” she said, noting ‘the MJT’s positive atmosphere and challenge of the competition’ as her main reasons to play.

MJT U15 Girls: 13-year-old Brooklyn Fry, 13, of Shell Lake, SK, came out to shoot 93-96 in the MJT U15 Girls division and credits the birdie she made on the first hole, round one, as her best hole of the tournament, noting how important it is to get off to a great start.

MJT Collegiate 19-23: The Lloydminster event saw the first time the MJT Collegiate division was contested in Saskatchewan in 2018. Jordan Unger, 19, of Saskatoon, SK, came out on top with a two-day total of 168 (86, 82), and said he is happy to get the monkey off his back by recording his first MJT victory. “I feel relieved to get my first MJT win.” Runner-up honours went to local 19 year-old, Jason Kim, who shot a two-day total of 172.

In addition to the individual division champions featured above, overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website here which show winner details for the PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin, MJT Comeback Award as well as the MJT Academy Program Point Standings.
