Nine shortlisted for Junior World Championships at MJT Lindsay Kenney Classic

Langley, B.C. (May 7, 2018) – 14-year-old Chaewon Baek of Langley, BC, fired rounds of 73,68 (141) to make a great comeback in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Lindsay Kenney Classic at Pagoda Ridge Golf Course in Langley, BC, May 5 and 6, where a packed field of over 90 juniors were vying for titles in seven divisions as well as for age-specific short-listed qualifying spots in the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego this July.

Lindsay Kenney LLP, a Tournament Sponsor of the MJT for the past 20 years, supported this successful event once again. Winners of each division are highlighted below, and recipients of the PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and MJT Performance Awards are posted online on the LK Law Classic Results page. Photos of the event can be found on the MJT Facebook page.

MJT Girls U15: Familiarity was the key to Chaewon Baek’s victory this weekend. The Langley, BC native said, “This was my third year in a row playing the Pagoda Ridge event.” Baek was able to erase a four shot deficit and overcome runner-up finisher, Tina Jiang, 13, of Richmond, BC, by one shot. Jiang, who led after an opening round 69, shot 73 on Sunday for a two-day total of 142. Baek made sure to give credit where credit is due saying, “I am thankful to my parents and grandparents for always supporting me.”

MJT Girls 15-18: Euna Han, 15, of Coquitlam, BC moved up a division this year, but the result was the same. With rounds of 70,72 totaling 142, Han was able to hold off her field to win the MJT Girls 15-18 Division by three strokes. Runner up honours go to Phoebe Yue, 18, of West Vancouver, who has committed to attend UCLA in the fall. Han was all smiles after her round on Sunday saying, “I just tried to stay positive and play my game.”

MJT Peewee Boys: Ryan Liang, 11, of Vancouver, BC, outlasted a late push by 2017 champion, Justin Bjornson, 12, of Surrey, BC. Liang made two bogeys on Sunday, but matched them with two birdies on his way to an even par, 72 and a two-day total of 145 to capture the Peewee Boys Hoselton trophy. Liang said, “I enjoy playing on the MJT because it is very good competition and there are a lot of really good players.”

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: Playing up a division, Ethan Posthumus, 12, of Coquitlam, BC, led the way in the Bantam Boys division with rounds of 72 and 73 (145). Posthumus said, “I feel like this victory is one step towards having a great golf season.” He edged out Brycen Ko, 14, of Richmond, BC by three strokes to take home the Hoselton trophy, saying, “This has given me confidence and momentum going forward.”

MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16: Andy Luo, 15, of Burnaby, BC, was able to make 12 birdies over 36 holes to win the MJT Juvenile Boys Hoselton trophy. His scores of 72, 70 (142) were good enough for an eight shot victory over Cole Bowering, 16, of Vancouver, BC. Luo is excited to be shortlisted for the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego this July. “I feel great because it was an IMG qualifier and it was my first win this year.”

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Callum Davison, 17, of Duncan, BC, was the only player under par both days of the tournament shooting 70, 69 (139) to claim the Hoselton trophy for MJT Junior Boys. Trailing Davison by seven shots was Bernie Xu, 18, of Richmond, BC who shot 73, 73 (146). Davison is looking forward to a successful season on the links. He says this win “is a good start and I hope it (the momentum) carries on for the rest of the season.”

The following players have been short-listed for positions in the Junior World Golf Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course: Michelle Liu, Bonnie Zhai, Chaewon Baek , Tina Jiang, Euna Han, Ryan Liang, Justin Bjornson, Ethan Posthumus, and Callum Davison. Finalists will be announced once qualifying completes across the country.
