MJT Ontario Wins International Team Challenge presented by Freedom 55 Financial

Welland, ON - (September 26, 2016) – Decent weather and spectacular course conditions topped off a successful junior golf team event – the MJT International Team Challenge (ITC) presented by Freedom 55 Financial – at Hunters Pointe Golf Club in Welland, near Niagara Falls, Ontario, which ran on September 24 and 25 under the auspices of the Maple Leaf Junior Tour (MJT), Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.

The 96-player invitation-only junior event has a college-golf type format, hosting elite players in 16 teams from across Canada and the United States, including teams from the Golf Association of Ontario, top Academies including the International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) and the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, representing the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, the Prairies (Saskatchewan/Manitoba), Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Each six-player team was made up of two Junior Girls, two U17 Boys and two U19 Boys in a daily best four of six aggregate team scoring format.  The tournament also included an individual 36-hole medal play format for both boys and girls divisions.

Team MJT Ontario won first place with 594 points over the Golf Association of Ontario’s Team Ottawa (601 points). Third place went to Team MJT British Columbia (602 points) and Team Golf Performance Coaches rounded out the top four with 604 points. The four boys and two girls on Team MJT Ontario were Michael Dubois (Brantford), Eric Byun (Richmond Hill), Eric Shea (Brantford), Thomas Giroux (Georgetown), Hailey Katona (Tilbury) and Kirsten Giles (Georgetown).  

The individual Boys Champion was Team Golf Performance Coaches’ Connor Rochon, 17, of Toronto, ON, who fired perfect back-to-back rounds of 70 for a four-under-par total, edging a one stroke victory over fellow teammate Tyler Nagano, also of Toronto (73, 68) and Team MJT Ontario’s Eric Byun, 15, of Richmond Hill, ON (72, 69).

A playoff was needed to determine the Individual Girls Champion out of the 32-strong field of girls, won by GAO Team Niagara’s Emily Ward, 16, of Niagara Falls, ON, after she shot 75, 74 (149) to tie for the lead with Team MJT British Columbia’s Shania Remandaban, 17, of Coquitlam, BC (74, 75). There was a three-way tie for third at 151 total score between Team Essex Kent’s  Brooke MacKinnon, 17, of Chatham, ON (79, 72), Team MJT Alberta’s Alicia Easthope, 17, of St. Albert, AB (76, 75) and Team Western New York PGA’s Melanie Green, 14, of Medina, NY (76, 75).
