Three qualify for MJT Team Atlantic Canada to ITC at Fox Creek

Dieppe, NB – July 25, 2016 – The MJT Junior Boys 17-19 division managed to successfully finish 36 holes in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Golf New Brunswick Player of the Year Series at Fox Creek Golf Club in Dieppe, NB, over the July 23-24 weekend, before lightning strikes shortened play to 27 holes for the rest of the field where players were competing for division titles in six age divisions plus the chance to qualify for MJT Team Atlantic Canada into the International Team Challenge (ITC) at Hunters Pointe Golf Club near Niagara Falls, ON, this September.

Mackenzie Clark, 17, of Fredericton, NB, was the clear winner in the MJT Junior Boys Division, after he fired rounds of 76, 81 (157).  “I hit a lot of greens the last couple of days and it took some pressure off my short game,” commented Clark following the tournament, “The event was run really well and the course was really nice. I knew I had a few shot lead so just played safe. I plan to keep working on my game and improving.”  Alex LeBlanc, 17, of Dieppe, was runner--up (79, 86=165), and Dylan Chase, 18, of Brigg's Corner, NB, came away with third place in the division (84, 88=172).

MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 winner was Alexandre Boudreau,16, of Dieppe, who shot 43, 76 (119) for 27 holes, and said that coming down the stretch, he was ‘trying not to think about golf and just to trust my swing.’  He added, “I feel great about my win, it gives me a lot of confidence. I would love to go to the nationals (MJT Boston Pizza National Championship in Arizona).” Second place in Juvenile Boys went to Benjamin MacDonald, 15, of Bathurst, (41, 82=123), and third place to Laurent Landry, 16, of Dieppe,(40, 85=125).

Nathan Hogan, 14, of Bathurst, NB, shot 37, 82 (119) to claim the MJT Bantam Boys trophy over Owen Mullen, 12, of Truro, NS, (38, 82=120). Hogan said, “I was playing it safe on the last three holes, and it paid off. I just wanted to have play well during this tournament and have fun. Every MJT is exciting. My plans are to hopefully defend my Royal Oaks championship (next MJT event) and continue what I’m doing.”   Third place went to Lukas Cormier, 14, of Ste-Marie-de-Kent, NB, with his score of 46, 79 (125).

Marc-Andre Gaudet, 12, of St-Ignace, NB, took home the MJT Peewee Boys title (44, 79=123).  Following the tournament, Gaudent said that some of the reasons he managed to pull off a win was that  “my putting was really good.  I felt confident with my driver, and I was just calm and took my time.”   Runner up was Jakob Lorefice, 12, of Antigonish, NS, (45, 80=125), and third place went to Thomas Sutherland, 12, of Hammonds Plains, NS (47, 83=130).

In the MJT 15-19 Girls Division, it was Laura Wesselius, 17, of Intervale, NB, who took home top prize shooting 44, 80 (124).  Wesselius said, “My driver was very consistent today which helped keep my ball in play. Also the greens were in very good shape so it made it easy to get the speed.”  Mackenzie Scott, 15, of Upper Hampstead, NB, shot a 51, 92 (143) which gave her the runner up position.

In the younger Girls U15 division, Dieppe’s Julie Gauvin, 14, shot 40, 88 (128) to win, saying that coming down the stretch, “I was a little bit nervous.  I wanted to finish my game with a par.”  Mackenzie Deveau, 13, of Moncton, NB, (47, 95=142) took home the runner-up prize.

Alexandre Boudreau, Alex LeBlanc and Laura Wesselius were the eligible qualifiers for the team to the ITC in Ontario, and over a dozen additional prizes were also awarded to Longball Long Drive, MJT Closest-to-the-Pin, and Golf Town Comeback winners in the tournament, whose names are all listed on the tournament page on the MJT website.

Junior golfers now have one last stop to earn major MJT order of merit points to qualify for the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf at The Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, AZ, this November - which is the MJT Atlantic Canada Tour Championship/Golf NB Player of the Year Series at Royal Oaks Golf and Estates in Moncton on August 20-21.  For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
