Shea’s 67 a shoe-in for MJT Low Overall at Osprey Valley

Caledon, ON – (August 27, 2016) – 17-year-old   Eric Shea of Brantford, ON, fired a great opening round of 67 to finish at 67-78 and win Low Overall from the black tees and his third MJT Junior Boys division title in as many starts in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Prodigy Series which played out August 25 and 26 on Osprey Valley Golf Club in Caledon, ON.                                        

Shea cited his driving and putting as reasons for his victory, noting ‘the course was in excellent condition and the greens were rolling very well.’ He added, “I feel great about winning my third in a row and I feel great about my season so far.”  Tied for second in the division were Davey Morton   , 17, of Woodstock, ON   (81, 75=156) and Jack Dawson, 17, of London, ON (80, 76=156).

In the MJT Juvenile Boys division, first-time winner was Ewan MacBain, 16, of Toronto, ON, whose scores of 78, 70 (148) secured a two stroke victory over Carter Snowden, 16, of Kitchener, ON (78, 72=150). Third place went to Waterloo’s Dylan Henderson, 15, who shot 77, 74 (151).

Several close scores in the MJT Bantam division were recorded, with top spot going to Krtin Udith, 14, of Toronto, (77, 76=153). “Staying in the fairway and making five birdies in round two were the key reasons for my win,” he said. “I feel great because this is my first two-day tournament victory.” Three strokes back sat Ben Bauer, 14, of Hawkesville, ON, who shot 83, 73 (156), and three others shared third place at 160 total score: Isiah Katsube of Elmira, ON (84, 76),  Justin Chong of Mississauga, ON (80, 80) and Nick Cundari of North Bay, ON (79, 81).

Winner of the MJT Peewee Boys division was once again 10-year-old Andre Zhu of Richmond Hill, ON, who fired rounds of 76, 73 (149) for his fourth title this season and stated, “It was my iron play and putting – and I am competing on a yardage I am comfortable with.” Kevin Lee, 11, of Markham, ON, came second (78, 85=163) and Ethan Szabo, 12, of St. George, ON, came third (99, 89=188).

MJT Girls 15-19 division winner was 17-year-old Tatiana Tait of Waterloo, ON (87, 84=171) who said afterwards, “It feels awesome that I was able to win – this is my third MJT season and first win so It’s pretty exciting. The field was great and I had a good time!”  Rachael Rier, 17, of Hanover, ON, came second (86, 89=175) and Tess Scaman, 16, of Chatham, ON, came third (91, 86=177).

MJT newcomer, Vaijayanti Bharkhada, 14, of Brampton, ON, shot 81, 79 (160) to win the MJT Girls U15 title by an amazing thirteen strokes. “I kept focused through the two days, one hole at a time,” she said. “I’m happy (to win) - I’d heard good things about this tour – will definitely play again.” Second place went to Ashley Chow, 14, of North York, ON (84, 89=173) and third to Alexis McMurray, 13, of Oakville, ON (97, 97=194 ).

Eighteen additional prizes were awarded to Longball Long Drive, MJT Closest-to-the-Pin, and Golf Town Comeback Competition Winners in the tournament whose names are all listed on the tournament page on the MJT website.
