For Immediate Release

Cambridge, ON – (July 29, 2015) – The highly competitive MJT Players Championship came to a successful conclusion July 28th at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, ON, where over 100 junior golfers on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour competed for titles in six divisions and the chance to earn various rankings including MJT, AJGA, GAO and Golf Canada Order of Merit points. A perfect golf course and pristine weather allowed for a stellar two day tournament that produced some great scores and remarkable wins, highlighted by a hole-in-one by Kristen Giles, 15, of Georgetown, ON.

Low Overall winner and MJT Juvenile Boys Champion was Marcus Slipchuk, a 16-year-old from Amherstburg, ON, who headlined the results after firing 68-72 (140) to win his second MJT event of the summer. Slipchuk said afterwards, “I kept my head in the game, tried my best on every shot and played the tournament hole-by-hole. I feel very excited to win my division title and I am extremely grateful because there are many good players in the field, and I believe anyone could have won.” Three strokes back in the division was runner-up Parker Casey from Waterloo, ON, who shot (70-73=143).

MJT Junior Boys Champion was Kelvin Lim of Thornhill, ON, who shot 75-73 (148). Just one stroke back was runner-up Matthew Deven of St. Thomas, ON (75-74=149) while three players tied for third at 151 total score – Blake Mackey of Walkerton (79-72), Jeff Ash of Cambridge (78-73) and Justin Naro of Toronto (71-80).

14-year-old Waterloo resident Bennett Ruby cruised to an 11 stroke victory over the rest of his division to win the MJT Bantam Boys title. Ruby shot 76-73 (149) and said after his win, “I’ve got second place three or four times on the MJT this season so I was extremely happy to break my streak of second place. This was also the first tournament I’ve won so I am pumped to get my first win here at my home course.” Zachary Katzenstein of Thornhill, ON, was runner-up at 81-79 (160).

Rylan Marontate took home the MJT Peewee Boys championship trophy with back-to-back scores of 79-79 (158). The 11-year-old from Harrow, ON, managed to take the win by five strokes over runner up Charlie Smith of Carlisle, ON. “My two bunker shots that I put three feet from the hole were my tournament highlight,” said Marontate. “I was surprised to win because I wasn’t very good on the front nine both days.”

MJT Girls 15-19 champion was MJT veteran Alexandra Demko, 16, of Thunder Bay, ON, who won over an extremely competitive and packed field. Shooting 73-77 (150), Demko held off runner up Isabella Portokalis, 14, London, (76-77) by three strokes to claim her title, and said about her tournament, “The highlight for me was staying calm during the final stretch of holes when the nerves started to kick in. It was an accomplishment for me. Winning today is a huge confidence boost, but winning at Whistle Bear and having incredible friends around me during it was what made it extra special.”

14-year-old Shannon Coffey of Windsor, ON won her second MJT event in the MJT U15 Girls division, shooting a two day score of 78-81 (159). “On number eight I hit it over the water, chucked a dart to three feet and ended up making the putt for birdie,” she said afterwards. “I like MJT tournaments, and the more I play different and difficult courses the better I get.” Runner up to Coffey was Ellis Harvie of Oakville ON, who shot 91-80 (171).
