Ontario Season Opener at Rebel Creek heralds great start to 2015 Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour

Petersburg ON. – (May 11, 2015) – Ontario’s season opener on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour saw an action-packed two days of tournament golf at Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg on May 9th and 10th, highlighted by great weather and a hole-in-one. The tournament was also a shortlist qualifier for the IMG Academy Junior World Championships and a direct entry qualifier for the US Kids Golf World / Teen Golf Championships for specific age divisions.

Xander Boston, 16, of Kitchener, ON, aced the 11th hole on the first day of competition, and won special a MJT Gift Certificate from Miura Golf in acknowledgement of his achievement. Boston went on to tie for 11th place in the MJT Juvenile boys division that was won by Cole Tondeur, 15, of London, ON, who shot back-to-back rounds of 75 (150) to win by one stroke.

Some low scores were seen in the MJT Junior Boys division, where 18 year old Sean Leduc from Ottawa came in first (80-72=152), and in the new MJT Peewee Boys division, outstanding under-par rounds of 69-67 (136) handed 11-year-old Shawn Sehra of Windsor, ON, a run-away victory.

It was another close race in the MJT Bantam Boys division with Lukas Cowen, 14, of Clifford, ON, making a great charge on day two with a nine stroke improvement to win by one stroke (82-73=155).

Both winners in the Girls divisions won their respective titles by an incredible 15 shots. In the new MJT Girls U15 division, 13-year-old Hailey Katona out of Tilbury, ON, shot terrific scores of 74-75 (149) from 5157 yards to cruise to victory, and Cynthia Zhao, 14, from Toronto, ON, shot 80-83 (163) from 5569 yards to take the MJT Girls 15-19 title.

Each division had a Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, a Sligo Closest-to-the-Pin Competition and a Golf Town Comeback Award for best second day improvement in score; click here for names of the 18 winners.

Emily Zhu of Richmond Hill, Hailey Katona, Cynthia Zhao, Shawn Sehra, Lukas Cowen and Cole Tondeur are now shortlisted for the IMG Academy Junior World Championship subject to the outcome of the other qualifiers across the country. The players who receive direct exemptions into the U.S. Kids Golf / Teen World Championship Qualifiers are Krtin Udith of Toronto, Hailey Katona, Lukas Cowen, Cole Tondeur, Cynthia Zhao, Oscar Feschuk of London and Shawn Sehra.

The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in the province is the MJT Ontario Series/ International Junior Masters Qualifier at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster on May 23rd and 24th.
