Lavallee leads the way at MJT’s Selkirk stop

Selkirk, MB – (July 29, 2015) – A competitive field of 70 junior golfers on Canada’s number one-played Junior Golf Tour teed off in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Manitoba Series at Selkirk Golf and Country Club in Selkirk, MB, competing for titles in six divisions in the two-day tournament which ran July 27th and July 28th.

Six-year MJT veteran, 17-year-old Stefan Lavallee of Steinbach, MB, displayed fine form firing rounds of 72-71 (143) to claim Low Overall in the tournament and the MJT Junior Boys title. “I’ve been playing in the MJT events for many years and I enjoy the competition,” he said afterwards. “I have finished second twice this year so winning felt great.” Runner-up in this division was Tehvv Rudd, 17, of Winnipeg, MB (74, 76=150) while there was a tie for third at 151 total score between Aaron McIntyre, 18, of Winnipeg, (78, 73) and Josh Neufeld, 18, of Altona, MB (75, 76).

A packed MJT Juvenile Boys division was led by 16-year-old Cameron McIntyre of Winnipeg, who managed to hold off Caydon Klassen of Reinfeld, MB, by two strokes with strong, steady rounds of 75-75 (150). “I made 10 pars in a row the second day,” said McIntyre. “I feel amazing, winning my division.” Klassen shot 74-78, while there was another tie for third place in Juvenile at 153 total score between Spencer Norrie of Morden, MB (78, 75) and Evan Grierson of Winnipeg (76, 77).

Selkirk local Brady Bandura, 14, clutched out his first MJT victory in the MJT Bantam Boys division thanks to his great first day score, carding 74-81 (155) to beat 13-year-old Eric Strick of Winnipeg by one stroke. “My putting was on fire – I was making the long ones to save myself,” Bandura summed up. “I feel good because I played hard and I was looking forward to this tournament ‘cause this used to be my home course.”

The MJT Peewee Boys title was once again won by 11-year-old Braxton Kuntz of Winnipeg, and his 15 stroke victory handed him his third MJT win of the year (78-77=155). “I sunk a lot of short putts,” he stated. “I’m happy because I’m glad I played good.”  Carter Johnson, 12, of Winnipeg, came second (80, 90) and Dylan Normandeau, 11, of East St Paul, MB, placed third (85, 91) in the division.

Brynn Todd, 17, of Winnipeg, broke through after a number of second and third finishes in the MJT Girls 15-19 division and shot 82-82 (164) for a four stroke victory over runner-up McKyla Poponick, 18, of Selkirk (84, 84=168). Todd said afterwards, “Even though I didn’t play too well I still feel very excited about my first MJT win. Making birdies on both 17 and 18 on day one were highlights for me, and I kept calm throughout both rounds.” Third place went to Bobbi Uhl, 15, of Erickson, MB, who shot back-to-back rounds of 86 (total 172).

In the MJT U15 Girls division, Reece Carter won her second MJT event of the season. The 10-year-old from St. Andrews, MB shot 84-91 (175) in her victory over Kate Gregoire, 14, of Ste Anne, MB (88, 90=178). “I liked to play in this event because my friends play it and they are just great girls!” Carter said. “I liked that I golfed with my sister yesterday - it was so much fun and it kept us both calm and focused. I feel really proud about winning this because I work really hard every single day!” Third place went to Hayley Shanks, 14, of Brandon, MB (97, 100).
