115 Junior Golfers in Paradise at MJT’s Alberta Season Opener

LETHBRIDGE, AB. – (May 4, 2015) – A great sign for the future of the game could be seen in the packed field of 115 junior golfers who teed off the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Alberta Season Opener last weekend, competing for titles in six divisions at the superb Paradise Canyon Golf Club in Lethbridge over May 3rd and 4th.

2014 MJT National Boys 15-16 Champion Alexander Smith, 16, of Calgary, AB, cruised to a six stroke victory with two stellar under-par rounds giving him the overall low score of the tournament (70-71=141) and MJT Juvenile Boys division title. “It’s good to know I’ve won one already this year,” he said.

An outstanding final round of 68 vaulted Michael Martin into the lead in the MJT Junior Boys division which he clinched by one stroke (76-68=144). Martin, 17, of Calgary, who shot eight strokes better on his second day to edge out the rest of the field, commented, “My putting held me in there and I was fortunate to make an eagle on the last hole to win by one. I’d like to send out a big thanks to my parents for always supporting me.”

In another exciting finish, 14-year-old Ronnie Postnikoff of Medicine Hat, AB, fired 69 on day two to improve by nine strokes for a come-from-behind victory in the MJT Bantam Boys division, winning by one stroke with his scores of 78-69 (147). “I feel like it’s a great way to start out the year and going into the juvenile division soon, it’s a momentum booster.”

11-year-old Hunter Thompson out of Calgary placed first in the MJT Peewee Boys division in a 27 hole competition after a stellar day two (42-71). “I just wanted to make birdie on 18 to shoot par and I did it, “he said. “I love the golf course and the tournament was amazing.”

Calgarians won both Girl Division titles, with 17-year-old Kenna Hughes taking the Girls 15-19 trophy with rock solid rounds of 73-74 (147) for a seven stroke winning margin. “I was happy that I kept my composure and played well the entire weekend,” Hughes noted. In the younger Girls division of players aged 14 and under, Sydney Scraba shot 50-88 in a 27 hole contest to dominate her age group by 11 strokes.
