106 young golfers compete in MJT’s Willows event Wood, Normand, Moser and Sawchuk crowned MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Champions

Saskatoon, SK. – (July 5, 2014) – A packed field of 106 young golfers teed it up at the Boston Pizza-presented MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Championship at The Willows Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon, SK, this past week, competing for titles in eight divisions.

The field comprised players on the MJT Mini Tour for ages 12 and under, as well as players up the age of 19 on the regular Tour. Mini Tour players competed over 18 holes on July 4th only, where the Atom Girls and Boys division winners were siblings Delihja (113) and Drayjon Sparvier (83), of Cowessess First Nation, SK, and the Peewee Boys division winner was Carter Wingert, 12, of Saskatoon (72).

In the regular MJT two-day event on July 3rd and 4th for players up to age 19, Justin Wood, 19, of Unity, SK, closed with a fine two-under-par round (73, 70=143) to beat Leighton Bearchell, 17, of Moose Jaw, SK, by two strokes to win his third MJT and the MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Boys 17-19 Champion title. “On the first day I made a tough triple but I bounced back with birdies on two of my last three holes,” said Wood. “Leighton and I had a great back and forth battle both days. It feels good to take the first three titles of the year.” There was a tie for third in the division at 149 total score between Cory Selander, 17, of Prince Albert, SK and Adam Schoettler, 18, of Regina, SK.

The MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Juvenile Boys 15-16 Champion was Diehl Normand, 16, of Meadow Lake, SK, who also closed with a two-under-par round (76, 70=146) to beat Noah Kozack, 15, of Regina, by two strokes (73, 75=148). “I almost had a hole-in-one and a hole-out for an eagle on 10 during my final round,” said Normand, who made a clean sweep of his division’s Long Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions as well. “Noah had me worried, I wasn’t sure if I was low enough to beat him today. I feel really good because it was my first victory on the MJT.”  The top three spots in the division were rounded out by Kade Johnson, 15, of Yorkton, SK (75, 75=150).

Bradley Moser, 14, of Saskatoon, was crowned MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Bantam Boys 14 and under Champion after carding 78, 72 (150) to hold off Ronnie Postnikoff, 14, of Medicine Hat, AB (76, 75=151). “My personal highlight was birdying the last hole for the win and shooting even par the second day,” said Moser, who came from behind for the victory. “I was three back of first and two back of second to start the day and four back coming into the last hole. I didn’t give up and picked up the win.” Andrew Campbell, 14, of Saskatoon, placed third in the division (75, 80=155).

Back-to-back rounds of 82 handed the MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Girls Champion title to Kayla Sawchuk, 15, of Prince Albert, who cited keeping her focus and staying positive with a steady mental game as keys to her victory. “There were lots of new girls in this tournament and the scores were close. It’s good to know that all the practice showed in my placing.” Runner-up was Chloe Sies, 15, of Melville, SK, who barely made it to the tournament due to the flooding (83, 88). Third place went to Taylor Swift, 17, of Lloydminster, AB (93, 92).

Kayla Sawchuk also won her division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, together with Diehl Normand, Jordan Bean of Saskatoon, and Adam Schoettler of Regina, SK. In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the winners were Normand, Stephanie Chelack of Calgary, AB, Cole Nagy of Saskatoon, and Zach Hurd of Prince Albert. Golf Town Comeback awards for best second day improvement in score went to Courtney Wichihin of Sturgeon Lake, SK, Jack Fischer of Regina, Jarrett Brehmer of  Balgonie, SK and Tyrell Wees of Regina.
