Bubber goes low on MJT at Cambridge 8-year-old amazes; brother-sister duo win titles

Cambridge, ON – (September 29, 2014) – A full field of 73 junior golfers turned out to compete for titles in eight divisions at the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Nationwide One Day Fall Series at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge, ON, this past Saturday, where the future of golf showed promise indeed.

The September 27th event comprised players on the MJT Mini Tour for ages 12 and under, as well as players up the age of 19 on the regular Tour. “We had a great day - a sunny 25 degrees with no wind, and Cambridge Golf Club was in nice condition,” said MJT Tournament Director, David Smallwood. “The highlight was Kelly Zhao shooting 74 in the Mini Tour – she’s only 8 and can't weigh as much as 50lbs.”

Kelly Zhao, 8, of North York, shot 74 from modified tees and won the Atom Girls title by 13 strokes. The other Mini Tour division winners were Garvey Knapp, 10, of Mississauga, in Atom Boys (86), Bavake Sihota, 12, of Caledon, in Peewee Boys (71), and Oakville’s Rachel Malone, 11, and Alexis McMurray, 11, who tied at 120 total score in Peewee Girls.

In the Junior Tour for players up to age 19, low overall went to Saurav Bubber, 17, of Mississauga, who fired a one-under-par 71 to edge runner-up Matthew Wood, 19, of Hamilton, (72) and win the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 title. Third place went to MJT veteran Craig Stefureak, 17, of Caledonia, who shot 74.

The brother-sister duo of Nicklaus and Alexa Naumovski from Hornby won their MJT division titles in Juvenile Boys 15-16 and Girls respectively. Nicklaus, 15, carved out an even-par round of 72 to hold off a tough field by a one stroke margin. Runner-up was Matt McGhee, 16, of London, (73) followed by a pack of players at 74 (Cougar Collins of Caledon, Owen Dick of Toronto, Parker Lobban of St.Clements, and Anthony Occhiuto of Guelph).

Alexa Naumovski, 17, carded a solid 75 to win the MJT Girls title by six strokes over 10-year-old standout Taylor Kehoe of Strathroy (81). Hailey Katona, 12, of Tilbury, took third place with 82.

Alexander Turchan, 14, of Conestogo, claimed the MJT Batman Boys 14 and under title after shooting 82. There was a three-way tie for third place at 89 between Zachary Katzenstein of  Thornhill, Brandon Logan of Jarvis, and Carter Snowden of Kitchener.

Winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Kate Johnston of Ayr, Jonah McPhee of Waterloo, Parker Lobban and Per-Thomas Stormgaard of Orangeville. In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the division winners were Taylor Kehoe, Brandon Logan, Anthony Occhiuto and Saurav Bubber.

This was the final Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in the province for the 2104 season. Qualified players will next compete at the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship at The Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, AZ, November 14th to 16th.
