Kreze cruises to victory at Carlisle on MJT

Carlisle, ON. – (July 7, 2014) – A full field of young golfers teed it up at the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Nationwide Series at Carlisle Golf and Country Club in Carlisle, Ontario, where players ranging from age eight to 19 competed last weekend. “We had two fantastic days of golf with great conditions,” said MJT Ontario Tournament Director and PGA of Canada Professional Mike Skimson. “It was also great to see some new faces.”

The field comprised players on the MJT Mini Tour for ages 12 and under, as well as players up to the age of 19 on the regular Tour. Mini Tour players competed over 18 holes on July 5th only, where the Atom Girls and Boys division winners were Rozlyn Rooke, 9, of Milton, ON (80) and Beni Long, 9, of Toronto, ON (79).  In the Peewee Girls and Boys Divisions, it was Jacqueline Giles, 11, of Georgetown, ON (111) and Michael Katsman, 12, of Toronto (77) winning their respective divisions.

In the regular MJT two-day event on July 5th and 6th for players up to age 19, Sam Kreze, 17, of Kitchener, ON, was the Junior Boys 17-19 and Low Overall Champion, firing rounds of 76-73 (149) over the difficult Carlisle course to claim victory.  “I was just trying to keep the ball in play, it’s pretty tight out here,” said Kreze. “You need to keep the ball in play to shoot low scores.”  Second place in the division went to Robert Wilkinson, 17, of Dundas, ON, who shot 80-86 (166). Evan Hunt, 18, of Stoney Creek, ON, rounded out the top three (91-82=173).

15-year old Henry Luel of Oakville, ON, (74-82) won the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division in a one hole playoff over Adam Levschuk, 16, of London, ON (77-79) after both players finished regulation tied at 156.  “I got some high numbers out there, but I bounced back pretty good,” said Luel, “I knew we were tied; it was definitely nerve racking.”  Finishing in the division’s third place was Jarrett Fitzpatrick, 15, of Caledonia, ON, who carded rounds of 78-86 (164).

In the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under division, Jack Ferguson, 14, of St. Thomas, ON, claimed his first MJT gold medal with very solid rounds of 76-75 (151).  “I think my key was not making big numbers out there,” he said. “I would like to win again and make it to Arizona for the MJT order of merit championship at the end of the year.”  Finishing in a tie for second place three shots back was Carter Snowden, 14, of Kitchener, who shot 78-76, and Connor Munro, 11, of Etobicoke, ON, who shot 77-77.

14-year old Cynthia Zhao of Toronto carded back-to-back rounds of 80 to win the MJT Girls division title.  “I stayed consistent and hit every ball solid and didn’t think about the score too much,” stated Zhao about her game. “I was just happy that I stayed consistent both days.  Also, it feels good as I have never won on the MJT before.”  In second place one shot back was Kristen Giles, 14, of Georgetown, ON, who shot 80-81 (161) while Victoria Murray, 17, of Oakville finished in third place (87-79=166).

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition divisional winners were Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi of Cambridge, Carter Snowden of Kitchener, Daniel Catanzaro of Ancaster, and Sam Kreze. In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the division winners were Kristen Giles, Luca Carestia of Ancaster, Henry Luel and Robert Wilkinson of Dundas. Golf Town Comeback awards for best second day improvement in score went to Victoria Murray, Cameron Kerr of Waterloo, Danny Attridge of Dundas, and Evan Hunt of Stoney Creek.
