McLean, McMinniman, Margeson and Chandler win titles at MJT-NSGA Player of the Year Series in Amherst

Amherst, NS. – (June 8, 2014) – In another great turnout of competitive junior golfers in Nova Scotia, Meghan McLean, Corey McMinniman, Shaun Margeson and Matthew Chandler claimed division titles in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT-Nova Scotia Golf Association’s Player of the Year Series at Amherst Golf Club on June 7th and 8th, which was also a qualifier for age-specific shortlisted spots on MJT Team Canada to the SRIXON International Junior Classic in New South Wales, Australia, this October.

“It was chilly and very windy the first day,” said MJT Tournament Director and PGA Professional, Louis Melanson. “But the golf course was in excellent shape and the kids had a great time.”

Matthew Chandler, 15, of Chester, NS, claimed the Low Overall Title and the MJT Juvenile Boys Division Champion with solid scores of 83-74 (157), becoming shortlisted for a spot to the Australian event as a result.  “Danek (Hadley) made birdies on two and three, so I thought it was going to be a tough day,” said Chandler, “and considering the tough conditions on the first day with cold and wind, I am very excited as this is my first win in a bigger tournament.”  Hadley, 16, of Bathurst, NB, shot consistent scores of 81-81 (162) and finished tied for second with Alexandre Belanger, 16, of St-Jacques, NB, who carded 78-84 (162).

In the MJT Junior Boys Division, Corey McMinniman, 17, of Fredericton, NB, carded 83-78 (161) to claim the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 title. “It feels good to win today,” said McMinniman, “I played better today, my putting was better today.”  Finishing second in the division was Devan Macdonald, 17, of Trenton, NS, who shot 84-81 (165) while Simon Richard, 17, of Dieppe, NB, carded 90-83 (173) to place third.

14-year old Shaun Margeson of Fall River, NS, won the MJT Bantam Boys Division after shooting very solid rounds of 75-71 (146).  Margeson said his key this weekend was that he ‘kept making pars, hitting greens and kept the ball in the fairway.’  Finishing in second place was Maxime Gaudet, 14, of Memramcook, NB, (74-78 =152) while Sam Roy, 14, of Truro, NS, shot 83-75 (158) to round out the top three.

McLean, 15, of Port Williams, NS, fired 90-79 (169) to win Low Overall and the MJT Junior Girls title by ten strokes over her sister, Heather McLean, 13, who shot 90-89 (179). “It feels good to win,” said McLean, “this is a big tournament and I am very proud to have won it.  My sister had me tied on day one, but I thought that I had her after the front nine today.” With McLean’s win, she will be short-listed for the team to Australia.  Third place in this division went to Annick Duguay, 17, of Bathurst, NB, who shot 111-98 (209).

The two-day tournament also featured Skills Competitions, where divisional winners were Meghan McLean, Shaun Margeson, Ben Macdonald of Halifax, NS, and Devan Macdonald in the Mr. Lube Long Drive, together with Annick Duguay, Hayden Roy of Truro, NS, Andrew Cooke of Hammonds Plains, NS, and Jake Lloy of Windsor, NS in the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvement in score went to Duguay, Sam Roy, Charlie Doran of Bedford, NS, and Jake LLoy.
