Montgomery stuns 96 player field with 11-under-par victory at MJT’s Players Championship

Cambridge, ON – (July 23, 2014) – Outstanding scores came out of the 96-strong field at the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Players Championship at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, ON, on July 21st and 22nd, headlined by 17-year-old Josh Montgomery of Oak Gables Golf Course who shot an 11-under-par score of 133 for the two day tournament.

Montgomery, of Ancaster, ON, blitzed his way around the first-class Whistle Bear course with brilliant scores of 66, 67 to win Low Overall and the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 title, yet only just managed to hold off Kitchener’s Sam Kreze, 17, who was also on fire with rounds of 68, 68 (136) and finished second, three strokes back. Third place in the Junior division went to Adam Graham, 18, of Sarnia, ON, who carded very good scores of 70, 71 (141).

Impressive scoring continued among the Juvenile Boys 15-16, where Hayden Edworthy, 16, of Cambridge, ON, carved up the course with a two-under-par total of 70, 72 (142) to edge Gray Potter, 16, of Glen Williams, ON (69, 74=143) for the division title. Again just one stroke back, in third, was Carson DeThomasis, 15, of London, ON, with an even-par total score of 74, 70 (144).                               

MJT veteran and Burlington resident Madison Easterbrook, 18, soon off to Florida Gulf Coast University on scholarship, solidified her rightful spot as MJT National Junior Girls Champion and won the MJT Players Championship Girls division in style with fine rounds of 70, 72 (142). Eunice Hong, 17, of Thornhill, ON, played consistent golf and shot back-to-back scores of 74 to place second while Cynthia Zhao, 14, of Toronto, ON, took third place on the podium (77, 72=149).   

Rock solid golf from 14-year-old Parker Casey of Waterloo, ON, secured him victory in the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under division. He shot 70,75 (145) from the white tees to beat runner-up Zachary Katzenstein, 13, of Thornhill, ON (74, 73=147), by two strokes. Jack Ferguson, 14, of St. Thomas, ON, secured third place with very decent scores of 74, 76 (150).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest were Dylaney Day (Ladies Club of Toronto) of Toronto, Mitchell Catania of North Vancouver, BC, Ben Weaver (The Landing's Golf Course and Teaching Centre) of Kingston, ON, and Josh Montgomery. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Madison Easterbrook (Beverly Golf and Country Club), Jakson Kirk (Elmira Golf Club) of Alma, ON, Xander Boston (Grey Silo Golf Club) of Kitchener, and Adam Levschuk (Sunningdale Golf and Country Club) of London.  Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second-day improvement in score went to Grace Mitchell (Whistle Bear Golf Club) of Woodstock, ON, Michael Katsman (Meadowbrook Golf Club) of Toronto, Jacob Smith of Brantford, ON, and Steven Minson (Hidden Lake Golf Club) of Burlington.
