Winners crowned at MJT-PGA of Manitoba Junior Championship presented by National Bank Financial

Winnipeg, MB – (August 21, 2014) – It was hot and sunny both days at the beautiful Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg for the MJT-PGA of Manitoba Junior Championship presented by National Bank Financial, which ran August 19th and 20th.

It was another Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour win for Manitoba Provincial Junior Champion Travis Fredborg, 18, of Selkirk, MB, whose smooth rounds of 68-72 (140) gave him a seven shot win margin and the MJT-PGA of Manitoba Junior Boys 17-19 Champion title. “I stayed calm and patient and although the second day was tough I knew my breaks would come,” he said, adding, “I knew all my competitors were good players. It feels good to end the year with a ‘W’, nice to take home the last MJT of the year.” Cole Peters, 18, of Steinbach, MB, fired a brilliant 67 on day one but backed off a bit on day two to finish runner-up (67-80=147).  Brett Swidinsky, 18, of Winnipeg, (73, 75) and Devon Schade, 19, of Beausejour, MB (72, 76) were right up there to tie for third at 148.

After being injured early on in the spring, it was nice to see Stefan Lavallee, 16, of Steinbach, bounce back late in the season and fire two great rounds of 72-70 (142) to win the MJT-PGA of Manitoba Juvenile Boys 15-16 title by three strokes. “Finishing the last four holes with three clutch birdies was key,” he said. “It feels great coming from behind and winning the last tour event. This was my goal for the end of the year.” Winnipeggers Cameron McIntyre, 15, (72, 73) and Izac Silagy, 16, (71, 74) played solid both days to secure a tie for second place in the division.

Ryan McMillan, 14, of Winnipeg, M (76, 69=145) did everything he could with the best day two score in the field to challenge Marco Trstenjak, 14, also of Winnipeg, for top spot in the Bantam division, but fell one shot short.  Trstenjak was steady enough with scores of 70-74 (144) for his second MJT-PGA of Manitoba Bantam Boys Champion title here at the Transcona Golf Club, and said, “Ryan played very well on the back and hit it tight on 18 so I had to two-putt to win. It feels great because in one of the last MJT’s I lost to Ryan by one but this time I got him by one shot!” Transcona's Cole Uzat, 14, of Selkirk, came back nicely on day two to capture third by a shot (77, 74=151).

A very close battle for the MJT-PGA of Manitoba Junior Girls title saw the top three being separated by only one shot. McKyla Poponick, 17, of Selkirk, was victorious with solid play on day two (79, 77=156). “There were about five of us that were super close and it could have gone either way,” she said. “It feels really good to break 80 both days and to win!” Brynn Todd, 16, of Winnipeg, (80, 77) and Alexandra Demko, 15, of Thunder Bay, ON (77, 80) played well but both fell short and tied for second.

Winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Veronica Vetesnik of Winnipeg, Wesley Hoydalo of Selkirk, Cameron McIntyre of Winnipeg, and Eric Trudeau of Lorette, MB. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Vetesnik, Anthony Leicht of Winnipeg, Stefan Lavallee and Orin Rambow of The Pas, MB. All four Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvement in score went to Winnipeggers - Katherine McGlenen, Nic Fanning, Ted Glass, and Bart Kaminski.
