Sackett shines on MJT Prodigy Series at Teulon Qualifies for San Diego Junior Amateur

Teulon, MB. – (July 5, 2014) – 18-year-old Zach Sackett blitzed the Teulon Golf and Country Club in Teulon, MB, to claim low overall in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Prodigy Series on July 3rd and 4th, qualifying for a spot in the Future Champions Golf San Diego Junior Amateur at Steele Canyon and Sycuan Resort next January in San Diego, California.

“It was nice to get the kids playing competitive golf again here in Manitoba,” said MJT Tournament Director and PGA Professional, Ed Boge. “And it was another great event hosted by the Teulon Golf and Country Club.”

Sackett, of Winnipeg, claimed his second MJT Junior Boys 17-19 Division title of the season after firing rounds of 73-68 (141) en route to a three shot victory over MJT veteran Steve Young, 18, of La Salle, MB, who shot solid rounds of 70-74 (144). “I made an eagle and five birdies the last 11 holes,” claimed Sackett, who rated the course in good condition especially after all the rain the past few weeks. “After an early double bogey I really settled in and was able to go to town on the closing stretch. It feels awesome (to win).”  Finishing in a tie for third place in the division at 150 total score was Devon Schade, 19, of Beausejour, MB (76-74) and Stacy Faron Genaille, 17, of Mafeking, MB (71-79).

16-year old Stefan Lavallee of Steinbach, MB, was low in the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 Division, carding solid rounds of 77-77 (154) to battle back from previous injuries and win over 15-year-old Cameron McIntyre of Winnipeg who shot 79-76 (155). “I tried to always keep the ball in play off the tee,” said Lavallee. “I just focused on my own game as I can’t change what other players do.” Carter Bradley, 16, of Winnipeg, came third in the division with scores of 80-78 (158).

In the Bantam Boys 14 and under division, 14-year-old Ryan McMillan of Winnipeg continuing his winning ways finishing 76-74 (150) to claim top spot by one shot over Marco Trstenjak, 14, also of Winnipeg, who shot 76-75 (151).  “Marco is a monster and had me worried,” said McMillan. “It was absolutely amazing beating Marco.”  Just one stroke separated the top three in this division where third place went to Brendan Kesterke, 14, of Headingley, MB, who carded 80-72 (152).

In the MJT Girls Division, Bobbi Uhl, 14, of Erickson, MB, shot back-to-back rounds of 84-84 (168) to edge out Marisssa Naylor, 16, of Winnipeg who battled hard but could not hold on to her first round lead (83-68=169).  “Marissa and I were very close the whole time so I didn’t know what would happen,” said Uhl. “The course was pretty wet and I would like to thank the maintenance staff for making it as best as it could be. It feels amazing to win!”  Rounding out the top three among the Girls was Stefanie Lasuik, 18, of Warren, MB, who carded 87-87 (174).

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition divisional winners were Bobbi Uhl, Cole Uzat of Selkirk, MB, Colby Dudek of St. Andrews, MB, and Dayce Roulette of Winnipeg, while in the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin, the division winners were Angela Dueck of Morris, MB, Zak Bannatyne of Winnipeg, Tehvv Rudd of Winnipeg, and Josh Hofer of Warren. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvement in score went McKyla Poponick of Selkirk, Jordan Hughesman of Winnipeg, Harley Hoydalo of Selkirk and Josh Hofer.
