MJT Ford Series-PGA of Alberta Junior Champions Crowned Grosart, MacDougall, Allan and Oosterhuis claim Division Titles

Calgary, AB. – (July 24, 2014) – A packed field of 100 young golfers teed it up at the Boston Pizza-presented MJT Ford Series / PGA of Alberta Junior Championship at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta, this past week, competing for titles in eight divisions.

The field comprised players on the MJT Mini Tour for ages 12 and under, as well as players up the age of 19 on the regular Tour. Mini Tour players competed over 18 holes on July 21st only, where the Atom Girls and Boys division winners were Jayla Kucy, 8, of Camrose, AB, who shot 86, and Jace Shannon, 9, of Forestburg, AB, who shot 75.  In the Peewee Boys Division, 12-year old Dylan Bercan of Vancouver, BC, shot 72 from the modified tees to claim the title.

In the regular MJT three-day event on July 21st through 23rd for players up to age 19, Carter Grosart, 18, of Calgary (72-73-66=211) held the hot hand on the final day carding low round of the tournament (66) to be crowned MJT Ford Series / PGA of Alberta Junior Boys 17-19 Champion and win the Overall Low title.  “Shooting 66 today was my highlight for the week,” said Grosart.  “This win is pretty nice today after getting disqualified at provincials; this is nice.”  Finishing in second place and claiming the silver medal was 17-year old Calgarian Nolan Renwick, who fired 78-78-71 (220) to edge Greg Billingsley, 19, of Calgary, who carded rounds of 73-72-76 (221) to finish third.

The MJT Ford Series / PGA of Alberta Juvenile Boys 15-16 Champion was Brendan MacDougall, 16, of Calgary, who was one of only two players to break par on the very difficult and windy second day shooting that day’s low round (68) and winning with three solid scores of 75-68-72 (215).  MacDougall said of his tournament, “It feels great to win. My highlight was shooting 68 on the second day – in tough conditions.”  Second place in the division went to 15-yaer old Landon Stellingwerff of Calgary who carded rounds of 72-80-72 (224), while Matt Campbell, 15, also of Calgary, shot 78-78-75 (231) to round out the top three.

Korbin Allan, 14, of Lyalta, AB, was crowned MJT Ford Series / PGA of Alberta Bantam Boys 14 and under Champion after firing 71-77-74 (222). Allan capture his division by 16 shots over his nearest rival. “It feels pretty nice to win today,” he said. “My 71 on the first day was my highlight.”  Finishing second was Jordan Bean, 13, of Saskatoon, SK, who shot 82-84-72 (238), while third place went to 14-year old Ronnie Postnikoff of Medicine Hat, AB (84-81-74=239).

Three days of consistent scoring (79-79-82=240) handed the MJT Ford Series / PGA of Alberta Girls Championship to Rayna Oosterhuis, 18, of Edmonton, AB, who said she ‘careered on the front nine of the first day.’  “It is the first time that I have shot par on nine holes. This is my first win on the MJT, so this win feels good.”  Finishing one shot back was Emily Creaser, 17, also of Edmonton, who carded 79-81-81 (241), while third place was claimed by Reese Martin ,14, of Brooks, AB, who shot 81-79-84 (244).

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition winners were Emily Creaser, Zach Farkas of Calgary, Scott Walker of Calgary, and Drew Dougherty of Calgary.  In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the winners were Creaser, Nick Spovieri of Calgary, Owen Murray of Calgary, and Chris Zeglen of Calgary.  Golf Town Comeback awards for best second day improvement in score went to Emily Drake of Calgary, Liam Wallace of Calgary, Ethan Schantz of Calgary, and Josh Rice of Calgary.
