Coup for Soucoup in MJT-PGA Atlantic Canada Junior Championship

Moncton, NB – (August 26, 2013) – Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour, the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, held the MJT-PGA Atlantic Canada Junior Championship at Royal Oaks Golf Club in Moncton, NB, on August 24th and 25th, where near perfect weather and scoring conditions were enjoyed by the field. Four division champions were crowned, with Travis Soucoup of Sussex, NB, taking home Low Overall honours.

Soucoup, 17, crowned MJT-PGA Atlantic Canada Junior Champion in the Boys 17-19 division, fired great rounds of 75-73 (148) on the very difficult Royal Oaks golf course. “I drove the ball and putted well,” he said. “At first I was worried about a couple of guys, but they dropped off.”  Runner-up in this division with two fine rounds was Marc-Andre Bellanger, 18, of Dieppe, NB, who shot 82-76 (158), followed by Philippe Patterson, 17, of Bathurst, NB, who closed with a two day total of 160 (82-78) to place third.

MJT-PGA Atlantic Canada Juvenile Boys 15-16 Champion was Jonathan Carroll, 16, of Bathurst, (78-71=149), who closed with a one-under-par round to beat first round leader 15-year-old Patrick Gauvin of Dieppe, (73-80=153) in a tight race.   “I made putts when I needed to,” said Carroll. “This is a great honour to win!”  Finishing in a tie for third place in the division was Danek Hadley, 16, of Bathurst, NB, who shot 80-76 (156) and Moncton’s Sam Reid, 15, who finished with 75-81 (156).

14-year-old Mario Lajoie of St.-Antoine Nord, NB, was crowned MJT-PGA Atlantic Canada Bantam Boys 14 and Under Champion after firing rounds of 82-72 (154) to win in a very strong field.  “It feels great to win two years in a row,” he said.   “I was five shots back at the start of the second round and played a pretty good round to win.” Finishing in second place at 157 was Andre Savoie, 14, of Dieppe, who carded 77-80, while Graham Gourley, 14, of Fredericton, NB, shot 82-76 (158) to place third in the division.

Laura Jones, 14, of Moncton, shot 94-89 (183) to win the MJT-PGA of Atlantic Junior Girls Champion title over runner-up Annick Duguay, 16, of Bathurst, who carded 96-98 (194).

Divisional winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Annick Duguay, Andre Savoie of Dieppe, Brandon Pierce of St. Andrews, NB, and Travis Soucoup.  Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Laura Jones, Stuart Earle of Woodman’s Point, NB, Alexandre Belanger of St-Jacques, NB, and Travis Soucoup. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second-day improvement in strokes went to Liam Garcia of Rothesay, NB, Alexandre Belanger and Marc-Andre Belanger.
