Playoff’s needed at MJT’s rain-shortened Teulon stop

Teulon, MB – (July 27, 2013) – Day one of the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Collegiate-Bound Series at Teulon Golf Club in Teulon, MB, was rained out, forcing the July 25th and 26th event to be shortened to one round where playoffs were needed in two of the four divisions to determine champions.  “It was sunny and windy on the second day,” said MJT Tournament Director and PGA Professional, Ed Boge.  “The kids enjoyed themselves and played some great golf.”

Austin Dobrescu, 16, of Brandon, MB, made a par on the second hole of sudden death to defeat 15-year old Rayan Soni of Winnipeg, MB, claiming the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 gold medal as both players finished with 75.   “It feels great to win as I got it up and down for birdie on number 18!” said Dobrescu. “I hit a lot of good shots and made some key putts when I needed to.”  Finishing third in the division and taking the bronze medal Stephen Kleysen, 16, of Winnipeg, who carded 79. 

Cameron McIntyre, 14, of Winnipeg, shot 78 to tie for the lead in the MJT Bantam Boys 14 & Under division and then made a par on the first playoff hole to claim the title, defeating 13-year old Wesley Hoydalo of Selkirk, MB, and Ryan McMillan, 13, of Winnipeg, MB.  “Coming down the stretch I was hyped, and all I needed was to make a solid par,” said McIntyre. “It feels really swell to finally capture a win.” 

Dana Todd, 18, of Winnipeg, put together a fine score of 77 to win the MJT Girls division gold medal.  “It feels like a great way to end my MJT season as I am leaving for the states soon,” said Todd. Veronica Vetesnik, 16, of Winnipeg, shot 80 to finish runner-up while McKyla Poponick, 16, of Selkirk, finished third after shooting 81.

A solid round of 75 secured the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 gold medal for 18-year old Brayden Twist of Portage la Prairie, MB, who commented, “I putted well and hit lots of fairways and greens.” He added, “It feels great to win my first MJT tourney!”  Finishing second in the division at 77 was Delwyn Doerksen, 19, of Altona, MB, while Zack Sackett, 17, of Winnipeg, rounded out the top three after shooting 78.

Divisional winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Ted Glass, Eric Corrigal, Nigel Hoydalo, and Veronica Vetesnik. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Brendan Kesterke, Josh Hofer, Brayden Twist and Katie McGlenen. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Stefan Swandel, Eric Corrigal, Cole Peters, and Lilly Hoydalo.
