Wyndham-West wins MJT Nationwide Series at Guelph Lakes

Guelph, ON – (July 15, 2013) – James Wyndham-West, 15, of King City, ON, fired back-to-back rounds of 75 to win Low Overall along with the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division title this past weekend, at the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Nationwide Series at Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club in Guelph.

“I was able to get the ball up and down from everywhere this week,” said Wyndham-West, who shot 150 and edged Jaret Chipman, 15, of Niagara Falls, ON (76, 75=151), by one stroke. “I had no idea what anyone else was doing so I just stuck to my game and trusted that if I finished with a good score that it would be able to win. I really liked how the course was set up for my game in particular. The front nine was more demanding then the back because you had to be so precise with your drives so that you could attack the greens. I am thrilled with being able to win here. I said to myself at the beginning of the weekend just do the best you can and have a smile on my face and see what happens in the end, and I was able to win.”

In the Junior Boys 17-19 division, the MJT title went to Rhys Davies, 18, of Waterloo, ON, who fired rounds of 76, 77=153 to win by two. “I drove the ball well and I made a lot of par saving putts,” he cited as the reasons for his victory. “I really like this course, it was in very good condition and the greens were very smooth. (The win) feels awesome and now I have a lot of confidence going into my next event - the Ontario Junior (provincial championships).” There was a tie for second place in the division between Tyler Waugh, 17, of London, ON (80, 75) and Ryan MacMillan, 19, of Newmarket, ON (78, 77).

14-year-old Ben Davies (no relation to Rhys), of Cambridge, ON, carded fine scores of 74, 77=151 to win the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under division in style. “I knew if I played my own game I would have a good chance,” he stated. “It feels great (to win).” Matthew Barnes, 14, of Waterloo, placed second in the division after shooting 81, 79=160.

Diana McDonald, 15, of Kingston, ON, converted two second place finishes so far this season into her first win and scooped the MJT Girls division title from Dylaney Day, 14, of Toronto, ON (85, 74=159) with fine scores of 79, 77=156. “I attribute the win to my parents and to my coach,” said McDonald, who rated the course and conditions ‘ten out of ten’ and said that the win ‘felt awesome.’

Day triumphed in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition among the Girls, however, where the other divisional winners were Michael Rizzo of Brantford, ON, Thomas Hunt of Georgetown, ON, and Ben Whiteside of London, ON. In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the winners were Lorelle Weavers of Burlington, Jack Quirke of Waterloo, and Rhys Davies. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Melissa Gabriele of Mississauga, ON, Brendan Lancaster of Thornton, ON, Jack Quirke and Rich Auld of Toronto.
