Three-under-par wins in three divisions at MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Championship

London, ON – (July 1, 2013) – The Golf Canada and Golf Association of Ontario-ranked MJT-PGA of Ontario Junior Championship at Forest City National Golf Club in London yielded some fine scoring from the top field of competitive junior golfers on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour this past weekend, where three-under-par was the winning score in three out of the four divisions.

“This weekend was great with a huge turnout and great weather,” said MJT Tournament Director and PGA Professional, Dave Smallwood. “We managed to dodge all the rain and play in good time. Best of all were the lowest scores we have seen to date with great head-to-head battles and some nervous times down the stretch. We had some tremendous results with numerous under par scores.”

Meghan Bennett, 18, of Pickering, ON, shot fought a tough battle with Madison Easterbrook, 17, of Burlington, ON, to triumph by one stroke and win the MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Girls Champion’s title with her three-under-par total of 71-70 (141). “I stuck a lot of wedges over the past two days which led to birdies,” said Bennett, who receives an exemption into the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea at Charleston Country Club in S. Carolina, USA, with her win. “Maddie Easterbrook always has me worried! She is a great strong competitor!  It feels awesome (to win) and now I have a lot of confidence going into my next event, the Ontario Junior (Championship).” Easterbrook, who recently made MJT Team Canada to Australia, settled for second with her excellent two-under-par total of 70-72 (142). Courtney Tolton, 17, of Mitchell, ON, shot 76-75 (151) to place third.

The MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Boys 17-19 Champion was MJT veteran, Keaton Jones, 17, of Kitchener, ON, who also fired a fine three-under-par total of 71, 70 (141) to edge hard-charging competitors Osama Khan, 17, of Mississauga, ON (73, 69=142) and Dylan MacQueen, 17, of Woodstock, ON (71, 71=142). “My whole foursome had me worried all day,” said Jones of the tough competition, adding, “The win feels good and gives me a confidence boost going into a busy schedule.”

More stellar closing rounds of 69 were recorded in the Juvenile Boys division, where another three-under-par total won the MJT-Ontario PGA Juvenile Boys 15-16 title for Gray Potter, 15, of Glen Williams, ON (72, 69=141). Potter, who attributed his victory to ‘lots of practice and hours on the range’, rated the conditions ‘Awesome, everything was really good’, and added, “This is my first win I’ve ever had, it feels great.” Runner-up in the division was Josh Montgomery, 16, of Ancaster, ON, who fired 74, 69 (143). Tied for third place at 145 total score were Brendan Seys, 15, of Port Lambton, ON (72, 73) and Matthew Vihant, 15, of Toronto, ON (70, 75).

Anthony Occhiuto, 13, of Guelph, ON, was crowned MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Boys Bantam Champion after firing 72, 75 (147) to win by six strokes over Dennis Weber, 14, of Ancaster (74, 79=153), stating that his win “feels good because I have been fixing a few things lately.” Jordy Denomme, 14, of Waterloo, ON, shot 76-80 (156) to place third.

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition winners in each division were Xander Boston of Kitchener, Jack Quirke of Waterloo, Andrew Cox of Kitchener and Annika Haynes of Oakville, while the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Anthony Occhiuto, Hayden Edworthy of Cambridge, Andrew Cox and Corrine Grans-Wood of Barrie. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Zach Friesen of Woodstock, Mitch Hardy of Kitchener, Mike Starr of Cambridge and Olivia Brock of London. “Boston Pizza pizza was enjoyed by all plus there were many draw prize winners,” summed up Dave Smallwood. “Forest City National Golf Club was in great condition after some rain Friday, and a very receptive venue.”
