Wilson wins Low Overall on MJT at Caledon

Caledon, ON – (August 7, 2012) – Two perfect days of warm, muggy weather and a well manicured golf course marked another great event on the MJT Ontario schedule where Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) players competed over the August 4th and 5th weekend at the Caledon Country Club in Caledon, Ontario. The juniors were competing for titles in four age divisions and the chance to qualify for a spot into the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour’s (RMJGT) Championship at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA, this December.

Chris Wilson, 17, of Toronto, ON, claimed his second MJT Boys 17-19 gold medal after shooting 79-75, earning Low Overall Honours and the exemption into the RMJGT event with funding provided by the MJT and Official International Events Sponsor, Travel Underwriters. “I made three birdies coming down the stretch,” he said. “It feels great (to win)! It’s always nice to win on the MJT because they are always very competitive.” Runner-up in this division with two solid rounds of 75-83 was Ryan Tsang, 19, of Thornhill, ON, followed by Wesley Kwok, 18, of Markham, ON, who carded 88-77 to take home the bronze medal.

The MJT Boys 14-16 gold medal went to Will Gavarkvos of Toronto, who played two solid rounds of 77-80 to edge out Ryan Vandenbroek, 16, of St. Thomas, ON (78-79) in a one-hole playoff. Gavarkvos, 16, said, “I thought that I was behind so I had to make back some strokes - I ended up doing so by birdying number 17.” Finishing one shot back in third place was Jack Quirke, 15, of Waterloo, ON, who took home the bronze medal (75-83).

13-year-old Dennis Weber of Ancaster, ON, took home the Boys 13 and under gold medal after firing rounds of 86-84 to edge out Alex Wyndham-West, 12, of King City, ON, who had carded 89-92 for a solid weekend. “It feels amazing!” said Weber of his victory, adding, “The course was really nice, it was in good condition.” Third place in the division went to Connor Monro, 9, of Etobicoke, ON, who carded rounds of 113-102.

London’s Julie Whalen, 18, had two solid rounds of 85-74 to win the Girls Division title over Michelle Ruiz, 16, of Mississauga, ON (83-81). “I shot a personal best (this weekend),” stated Whalen. “It feels great to win a tournament right before I leave for university.” Finishing third in the Girls division was Lorelle Weavers, 18, of Burlington, ON, who carded solid rounds of 80-85.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition in each division was won by Dennis Weber, Joel Albany of Georgetown, ON, Chris Wilson and Lorelle Weavers, while the divisional Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions were won by Connor Munro, Joel Albany, Wesley Kwok and Alexandra Garcia of Kitchener, ON. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Connor Munro, James Quinn-Rabot of Churchill, ON, Wesley Kwok and Julie Whalen.
