Albany takes all on MJT at BraeBen

Mississauga, ON – (July 16, 2012) – Consistent storms in the Toronto area all afternoon on Sunday caused the two-day Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) event on July 15 and 16 to be shortened to 27 holes. Players endured hot, humid conditions over both days, and the course was very dry and fast for the competitors who were gunning after four division titles plus a spot in the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) Notre Dame event in Indiana, USA, this October.

Long time member Joel Albany, 16, of Georgetown, ON, broke through for his first MJT victory to win the Boys 14-16 title and Overall Low Honours, claiming the FCWT exemption with his scores of 70-34 (104) for the 27 holes. “On the front nine of the second day, on the last four holes, I went birdie, par, eagle, birdie,” said Albany of his highlights. “My key to the victory was that I was never over par on any of the three nines that we played. I think (Saturday) was definitely the day to score well, since it was nice and warm and the winds were calmer. Sunday brought two long rain delays and the main key was to remain limber throughout the delays. It feels great to pull myself out of my playing funk and shoot some good scores. It was enjoyable to play with the partners in my group. They posed to be great competition.” Runner-up to Albany in his division was Ben Brandreth, 16, of Rockwood, ON, who shot 76–35 (111), while third place was claimed by Ethan Harlond, 15, of Grand Valley, ON, with his scores of 78–39=117.

Nicklaus Kennedy, 17, of London, ON, racked up his third MJT Boys 17-19 title after firing 72-35=107 for a five stroke victory. “I was just trying to stay focused because it had been a long tiring day,” he summed up. “The course had a unique layout that I enjoyed. The conditions changed dramatically so they were tough to adjust to. However it feels amazing as I did not expect to win my first three MJT tournaments.” Rhys Davies, 17, of Waterloo, ON, carded 77–35=112 to place second in the division and Matthew Chiasson, 18, of Cambridge, ON, placed third (76–37=113).

In the Boys 13 and under division, Ben Davies, 13, of Cambridge, shot 77–38=115 for the win, stating the key to his victory was “avoiding the big blow up holes.” He added, “The course was nice but it was very windy and wet. It feels great (to win)!” Two strokes back in second place was Mackenzie Raines, 13, of Kitchener, ON, who posted scores of 78 - 39=117 and third place went to Mitchel Borer, 13, of Ancaster, ON (85–43=128).

Sara Holland, 17, of Essex, ON, came first in the Girls division after firing 89–41=130, commenting that, “My personal highlight and the key to my victory in the tournament was overcoming a knee injury on the third hole of the first round and being able to battle through and hang in there.” Runner-up was Shanice Viner, 17, of Toronto, ON (98 53=151) and Victoria Mazzarolo, 17, of Ancaster, placed third (103–49=152).

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition in each division was won by Mitchel Borer, Colden Scott-Robertson of Brantford, ON, Alex Rajna of Waterloo, and Victoria Mazzarolo, while the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition Awards went to Mitchel Borer, Jackson Bowery of London, Justin Smith of Toronto, and Sara Holland. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvement were won by Connor Munro of Etobicoke, ON, Mikey White of Hamilton, ON, Garrett Atkinson of Oakville, ON, and Sara Holland.

The next MJT Ontario Series event is the Golf Association of Ontario and CN Future Links nationally-ranked MJT Players Championship at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge on July 23-24, a qualifier for the Golfweek West Fall Tour Championship in Menifee, CA, USA, this December.
