Promising Start to MJT Mini Tour at Meridian Golf Club

Tsawwassen, BC - July 2, 2011 – On Thursday, June 30, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) launched the first of three mini tour events in British Columbia at the Meridian Golf Club in White Rock. Juniors aged seven to 13 had a fabulous day at the tricky par 3 course where the greens were in outstanding condition.

The MJT Mini Tour has been introduced this year to give younger boys and girls who are tournament ready the opportunity to play on executive courses in a relaxed but competitive environment. Many first-time players were nervous; but those with a bit of experience made sure to help out the younger parties. Sportsmanship and etiquette were evident throughout the groups. “It’s nice to have parents caddying for the kids to ensure safety and pace of play, and it’s great to watch the camaraderie,” said Neil Bidewell, CPGA, and MJT Tournament Director. “This is such a good way to get kids exposed to the game of golf and tournament experience.”

Jae Wook Lee, 11, of Langley and Redwoods Golf Club, led the way in the Boys division with a 60, followed by Mitchell Thiessen, 12, of Chilliwack, who shot 62. Third place went to Voncan Omidi, 11, of Surrey, who carded 79. The top three in the Girls division were Ashley Omidi, 13, of Surrey, who fired 70, Alisha Lau, 11, of Richmond (73) and Rena Nakajima, 10, of Whistler (79).
