First-time Winners rule every division on MJT at Guelph Lakes

For Immediate Release – Guelph, ON – (September 26, 2011) –
Perfect weather with not a cloud in the sky and almost no wind greeted junior golfers in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Ontario Fall One-Day Series at Guelph Lakes Golf Club in Guelph this past Saturday, September 24. The golf course was playing long due to rain the previous week but otherwise was in fantastic shape.

Colin McCoy, 18, of Tilsonburg, fired 74 to win low overall and his first division title on the MJT, commenting, “My putting was very solid and was my key - making birdie on number eight was a highlight, and it feels good to win my first MJT event, hopefully this has opened the floodgates.” Runner-up in Boys 17-19 was Colton Clemmer, 17, of Kitchener, who shot 81 to edge third place finisher, Kody Fry, 17, of Grand Valley, by one.

The Boys 14-16 division was also won by a first-time champion - Jonathon Collins, 16, of Fergus, who fired 77 to beat fellow Fergus resident, Jason Basaur, 15, by three strokes. “My key was my solid iron play and hitting my approach into number three to three feet then making birdie was a highlight,” said Collins. “It feels great to get a win after sticking to my game plan.” There was a tie for third place in the division at 81 between Craig Stefureak, 14, of Caledonia, and Charles Corner, 15, of Cayuga.

A fine 77 secured clear victory and a first win for Alanna Haynes in the Girls division, which she attributed to good ball striking, and making a long putt for birdie. “It feels great to win with strong competition - a nice way to close my season,” the 17-year-old stated. Lorelle Weavers, 17, of Burlington, came second with 86 while there was a tie for third at 88 between Maddy Piccininni, 17, of Toronto, and Kirsten Degutis, 18, of Waterloo.

Mark Wodz, 13, of Toronto, rounded out the four first-time winners at the tournament after carding 78 in the Boys 13 and under division, and cited staying cool when he hit a poor shot as the reason for his wide margin of victory. “It feels awesome,” he said. Anthony Occhiuto, 12, of Guelph, was alone in second place with his 86 while two strokes back were Tristen Woolley, 13, of Orangeville, and Kyle Fancy, 13, of Hillsburgh, who tied for third.

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest, winners for each division were Kyle Fancy, Nick Schepens of London, Colin McCoy and Lorelle Weavers. The Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin division winners were Mark Wodz, Tyler Watson of Guelph, Tyler Schepens of London and Kirsten Degutis. There were also dozens of draw prize winners.

The last two stops on the MJT Ontario Fall One-Day series are October 8 at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge, and October 22 at BraeBen Golf Club in Mississauga. For full details, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
