Geiser holds back Hurricane Irene to go low overall at MJT’s Timber Ridge stop

- Brighton, ON – (August 29, 2011) – Hurricane Irene-related weather systems played havoc on golfers during the final round of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Ontario Series at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Brighton this past weekend, where high winds drove up the scoring average and challenged all competitors to maintain focus.

18 year old Jonathan Lam of Markham fired a brilliant opening round of 67 to lead by one over Brett Geiser, 17, also of Markham, however day two proved to be the deciding factor and Geiser won the Boys 17-19 Division title with scores of 68+76=144, after Lam closed with a 79 to finish at 146 total score, and third place in the division went to Oakville’s Joshua Richard-Munro, 18, who carded 77+78=155. Geiser commented, “I had a very good first day which got me to one off the lead and in good position for Sunday. Then Sunday, I just grinded out the front nine and a birdie from the waste bunker on eleven clinched it in my mind. The MJT run great tournaments and the fields really make you play to the best of your ability to win. I feel awesome to win over a great competitor like Jonathan and it was very close all day, lots of fun.” His victory secures him an exemption into the Golfweek Championship at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ, this December.

The weather pattern continued in the Boy’s 14-16 Division where Georgetown’s Joel Albany was the winner after firing 74+82=156. Albany, 15, said, “I needed to keep focused and imaginative in the high winds and cooling temperatures as it got tight coming down the stretch. It’s fun on the MJT and there is good competition at all tour stops. I am proud of my victory and I am glad to have the opportunity to play with the playing competitors that I did.” Albany’s win came by two strokes over a tie for runner-up at 157 total score between David French, 16, of Camlachie (77+80), and Nicholas Lam, 15, of Markham (77+80).

Ryan Ahrens, 13, of Peterborough, won the Boys 13 and Under title with great scores of 72+76=148, noting, “I tried to focus on hitting greens and did a great job of that. I struggled my last two events so it was a great boost to my confidence [to win] when I was a little down.” Kyle Fancy, 13, of Hillsburgh, came in second place (79+82=161) and Cobourg’s Jacob Richards, 12, was third (82+91=173).

Oakville sisters took gold and silver in the Girl’s Division where Alanna Haynes, 17, and Annika Haynes, 14, played some great golf, but it was younger sister Annika’s very strong opening round that earned her the win (74+84=158). She noted, “I stayed focused throughout the first round and tried to stay in the moment in a difficult second round back nine with wind gusts of 50mph or more. It feels great to win, especially shooting my lowest round in competition. I finished the season strong.” Alanna Haynes shot 81+81=162, while third place went to Toronto’s Maddy Piccininni, 17, (83+91=174).

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest, winners in each division were Kyle Fancy, Joel Albany, Ryan Amos of Komoka and Annika Haynes, while in the Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin, division winners were Ryan Ahrens, Joel Albany, Brett Geiser and Alex Amos of Komoka. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Scott Herod of Cambridge, Charles Corner of Cayuga, Michael Hunter of Manotick and Alanna Haynes.

With the MJT multi-day schedule complete for 2011, Ontario junior golfers can now turn their attention to a series of four one day tournaments this fall, starting at Foxwood Country Club in Baden on September 10. Remaining stops run in Guelph (September 24), Cambridge (October 8) and Mississauga (October 22). For full details and online registration, juniors can visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
