Cockerill cops top spot on MJT at Teulon

For Immediate Release – Teulon, MB – (July 30, 2011) –
Aaron Cockerill, of Gunton, MB, who played on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) in 2008 and 2009, paid a successful return visit this year as a 19 year old and competed in the MJT Manitoba Series at Teulon Golf Club in Teulon, July 28th and 29th, where he fired great rounds of 73-70 (143) to win low overall and the Boys 17-19 division title.

“I made tons of putts,” said Cockerill, who attributed his victory to his short game. Bret Thompson, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, who recently qualified for MJT Team Canada to Australia, came second in the division with back-to-back rounds of 76 (152 total), while third place went to Alex McDonald, 19, of Devlin, ON (81-75=156).

The Boys 14-16 division was won by Travis Fredborg, 15, of Selkirk, MB, who fired 78-74 (152) to edge runner-up, Cole Peters, 15, of Steinbach, MB, by one stroke. “I knew I was in contention down the stretch and held it together to clinch victory,” said Fredborg. “It feels great because I came so close every time this year and victory feels great!” Again just one stroke back of Peters was Steve Young, 15, of La Salle, MB, who claimed third place in the division with his scores of 76-78 (154).

The strong play and low scores continued in the Boy’s 13 and under division which had a tie for first place at 155 total score between podium veterans, Stefan Lavallee, 13, of Steinbach, (77-78) and Brendan Kesterke, 12, of Headingley, MB (79-76). Lavallee took first place prizing based on retrogression, stating, “It feels like I accomplished a goal and that I kept it all together.” Cameron McIntyre, 12, of Winnipeg, shot 80-79 (159) to finish third in the division.

Divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Milan Horanski of Selkirk, Josh Neufeld of Altona, MB, and Brett Zbediak of Gimli, MB, while in the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the winners were Kesterke, Young and Zbediak.
